James...great trip that.

The boat down is ok,cabins are small but hey they have a shower and a kharsie, food on there is a bit pricey tho.

Either get a return on the boat and stay along the Northern Spanish coast, less driving back home, get along to La Coruna in Galicia, stopping off along the way it is nothing like the Spain we all know, very green not so hot but it will be busy as your talking about August, prime time and more expensive.

If not, the drive back through Andorra and the Pyrenees is good.go via San Sebastion great city.Into France Biarritz is very pricey but lovely keep going up the coast towards Bordeaux/Cognac see if you can vist any vineyards but they may be closed as its August..so many more places on the way up to see.

Wish I was going...pics of the Mrs please and then I will decide...

Cheers Paul. I'm warming to all this northern Spain and taking the car. Actually think the return trip by ferry would be better as you say. We or I shall we say can avoid long drive home. There must be enough to do on this north to north west part of Spain to do and see. Yeah I agree it must get busy but we have no choice other than to go in August.

I'm thinking taking car to Santander via ferry and doing a road trip around the area and back up through France...

Anyone recommend places to visit or stop that they have been to?

Make sure you go via Millau Viaduct - the tallest bridge in the world.

And about 30km east of Cognac is Angouleme, where on the 3rd weekend in September they hold the 'Circuit des Remparts' (vintage car racing), but in August you will only be able to walk round 'the remparts'. Some amazing twists and turns and panorama's from the top.
