With Christmas approaching, I have been recalling one of my earliest visits to Selhurst. I had been to two games in the autumn of 1953, but didn't catch the "bug". Five years later I decided to give it another go, and turned up to watch us play Aldershot on 27th December 1958. In those days teams played each other home and away over the Christmas period, and we had won 2-1 at Aldershot on Boxing Day. We won 4-1, and I have a vague recollection that Gerry Priestley scored a goal direct from a corner - I think it was taken from the corner between the Arthur and the Whitehorse stands. Can anyone confirm this?

I regret I can't give you the exact details of Priestley's goal but we did win 4-1 with goals by Johnny Byrne (2), Tony Collins and Priestley in front of a crowd of 19,344. The previous day we won at the Shots 2-1 and Mike Deakin scored both goals (gate 6,080). That was the first season of Div 4 and we finished 7th. Zaha, Williams, Murray, Ambrose, Scannell. A 5-man forward line who scored 3 goals in 10 minutes on 27th September 2011 at .......................

I regret I can't give you the exact details of Priestley's goal but we did win 4-1 with goals by Johnny Byrne (2), Tony Collins and Priestley in front of a crowd of 19,344.

The previous day we won at the Shots 2-1 and Mike Deakin scored both goals (gate 6,080).

That was the first season of Div 4 and we finished 7th.

Zaha, Williams, Murray, Ambrose, Scannell.

A 5-man forward line who scored 3 goals in 10 minutes on 27th September 2011 at .......................

Great days eh! I remember Boxing Day 1962 I think v Millwall. It started snowing & that was the start of the hardest winter.

Yes, I was there and Ronnie Allen scored this penalty - we won 3-0. The snow stayed with us till Easter and we didn't have another home game till 16th March - nearly 3 months without a game. How the club survived all those months without income, I don't know. And how we fans got through 3 winter months with no games to go to, I can't imagine.

Boxing Day'62,watched the game from the terracing infront of the stands, in order to get some shelter from the snow, having deserted my regular viewing spot on the half way line on the opposite side. As previously mentioned, the snow stayed till Easter.Happy days.

Boxing Day'62,watched the game from the terracing infront of the stands, in order to get some shelter from the snow, having deserted my regular viewing spot on the half way line on the opposite side. As previously mentioned, the snow stayed till Easter.Happy days.

In that snowy and icy winter we had only one game in January, at Brighton, then managed one away game at Swindon in February, and the didn't play again until a visit to Notts Co on 9 March. After that, with the thaw setting in, things began to return to normality and we actually had our first home game since Boxing Day on 16 March winning 1-0 against Bournemouth. The season extended right in to the latter part of May to enable clubs to catch up with their postponed matches. Palace's last game was on 22 May. It appears the break did us no harm as, once the snow had gone, we finished the season strongly - form which we carried into the following season when we won promotion.

As a kid in the mid-1950s, seeing the old floodlights from our kitchen window in Whitworth Road, the writing was on the wall.
