I remember him playing as a youngster for Palace. I think he made his league debut with us and was quite a fast, tricky player. Wonder what he died of so young?

sad news, if i seem to recall he didnt really make it with us, played around the time after ian wright left, seem to think he apparently had attitude issues..

I just got hold of this photo which I believe to be Chelsea v Palace in Feb 1992. There are no details on the back.

David Whyte scored our goal and I reckon this must be it. If that's right it's a superb photo of him scoring as Geoff Thomas & Mark Bright look on.

Can someone please confirm?

I was at that game and that was the goal he scored in the 1st half, but I dont remember it being a header. I'm not certain ,but I dont think that was his goal. He did have a blinder that day though and we should have won.

What I meant to post was , that was the end he scored at in the 1st half, but I'm nearly sure I remember his goal being more of a solo effort, and not him getting on to the end of a cross as would appear to be happening in this photo.

I just did a bit of digging and in the Palace programme for our next home game, v Norwich, Feb 29th 1992, there's this photo which has a caption saying "David Whyte heads us in front at Chelsea". It's a reverse angle of the colour photo.

So this is conclusive proof that the new photo is of this goal which I am really happy about - it's a great way to remember our sadly departed old player.

Thanks for your input, Derry. Maybe you had one or two sherbets in the Kings Road.

Wow, looking at the two photos they must have been taken at the same split second judging by the position of the ball in relation to the ground, Geoff Thomas and David Whyte. Interesting to a photographer like me!

Supporting Crystal Palace since 19.45 on 29th August 1972 (approximately)!
