It is a seriously fabulous piece of writing and well worth spending £1.20 for, even if you bin the rest of the paper
I didn't think it was cynical. To me he was complaining about all the cynicism around football generally and pointing out that there's plenty of reasons to just enjoy the game and forget all the rubbish that sometimes goes with it.

He writes for the paper, doesn't mean he shares the owners views.

You may think him cynical but to me he was praising a mid table team with nothing to play for - except pride and their supporters - to fight back from 3-0 down against a top four team playing for the PL title.

From there, it was undistilled craziness until the final whistle blew, moments after Victor Moses had been presented with a gilt-edged chance, but missed the ball as he swung his left boot. Palace fans erupted.

As great as it is that we've got so much great press since Monday night I just can't help but be slightly cynical about an article looking down on cynicism in football. What are the chances Matthew Syed would have written the same article had we been in the championship and blown someone else's Championship title ambitions. What if it'd just been blowing Everton's Champions League ambitions (which we did a few weeks back)? Admittedly its almost the only article I've read where the comeback isn't just an aside to 'Liverpool blow their title chances' but all the same, until Syed is prepared to write articles about Plymouth having nothing to play for and still wrecking scunthorpe's title attempt and for the Times to publish it then its all a bit redundant for me.

Unfortunately, I think he is right, and the the status quo will remain.

Thank you, it's an excellent article. Saw Matthew Syed do an after dinner speech once ...I say "saw" because he started and ended with an astonishing display of table tennis prowess. Very entertaining.

Unfortunately, I think he is right, and the the status quo will remain. It may be a bit harsh but it's nevertheless true. The article would never have been written if it was about anyone other than the big 5. If that's not self serving of his and the papers self interest I don't know what is?

I went and bought the times to read it - was worth doing so as it was a really decent piece. Not just because it praises Palace, but because it was an acceptance of the fact the league needs more than just the big teams to thrive. It's still a while until we'll get the credit for the football we play, but to read someone taking an informed and considered view of the heart shown by the team and the fans was a nice surprise at a time where the focus from most was on Liverpool's failure on the pitch.

He deserves enormous credit for writing a piece which essentially subverts the Murdoch attitude to football.
