There is a thread on the bbs about this. It's not overtime, it's a regular shift, and the clubs don't pay for policing apart from those inside the ground, as I understand it.

I have not listened to it all yet, but on the latest (no. 96) FYP podcast Steve Browett said the club had to have them becuase of united fans. Despite their "public persona" they seem to be a bunch of holligans in shallow disguise, and have caused a lot of damage both within and without grounds as they travel around the country.
Taking the bungy jump since 1964. Never to see John Jackson in a shirt again Sorry to see Lee Hills go, did we ever see Alex Marrow? We did January 2013 |

Years back I went to watch a game at Blackburn when I was working in the area. A steward told me they hate both Manchester teams coming because the fans are truly awful. Far worse than any others.

Hopefully CCTV have identified the individuals concerned and passed them to the Old Bill.

M.United fans have always been scum, they are worse than Millwall and have an arrogance beyond any other fans. Their song "were man united well do what we want" is very apt. United are hated up and down the country and its not because of their success. Liverpool never used to be hated like they are during their success. United fans are banned from drinking at all away grounds in the country but they get no bad press about this, why? because they are M.United. I hate them with a passion.

There are no legends in football, but there are good memories... |

It might have seemed like a lot but there were 25,000 odd of us there remember, plus there's more officers than that amount in London, so a tiny proportion really. Someone else said on here that the board said it was mainly due to risks around Man U, apparently(?)
