On Monday, 4th April 1988 I traveled to Stoke to watch my heroes. Before the match, the teams were announced on the tannoy and instead of hearing John Salako's name we all heard the name 'John Salad' instead. Needless to say much hilarity was had by one and all and there and then the nickname began.

Just wondering if anyone else here remembers that. BTW the result was:

Stoke City 1 Crystal Palace 1

yep, remember it well - 1-1 draw.

When he came on as sub we all sang there's only one jonnie salad and it became his nickname with the players after that.

When he got in the England team on a Q&A what's your nickname - jonnie salad - classic

Yes, I was there Johng and remember it well. Very funny.

Although we didn't go up that year it was one hell of a season. Goals flying in all over the place. On our day we used to completely destroy opponents.

Also played quite a few games with 4 future England internationals starting: Wright, Gray, Thomas and Salako. Not many 2nd tier clubs can boast that.

Saw him the other day at the Shell petrol station on the A217 at top of Reigate Hill just before junction 8 of the M25. Was gonna give it the O Johnny....Johnny....but saw he had one of his kids in the car so thought better of it.
Was just starting to be a top, top player before that injury when on England duty.
There but for the grace of god and all that........

Well you were kind of right to begin with. He injured his knee on international duty colliding with a post just before the horrific injury against Leeds. I always felt that that knock for England played a part in his knee buckling like that by weakening it.

It was a horrendous looking injury and one of those that even the least squeamish can stand watching. It happened right in front of me as I stood in the Holmesdale, but it wasn't until I saw it on Saint and Greavsie the following Saturday that I saw the full extent of what happened.

Coppell actually made a complaint that they aired it, as our team were having pre match meal watching the programme and Steve felt it totally put the players off their stride.

Remember the announcer at Stoke and John was a hero of mine and still is, when my Brother Dave was terminally ill with cancer John came to the house to see him and talk with him, he was injured at the time and it couldnt have been an easy thing to do but he was brilliant, lovely guy.
