Agree with you on both points!! Yep Kenny Brown will also go down in my opinion as one of our best ever loans. In the 7 or 8 games he played as a left back he had a knack of scoring some thunderous goals with that left foot of his. Two of them were against Millwall and Charlton so he endeared himself to the Palace fans straight away!
Am I right in remembering one he scored at Derby, at the old Baseball Ground, in what must have been the second last game of the season? It was pretty much us or them for the second promotion spot, we went 1-0 ahead (goal scored right in front of the Palace end), but they won 2-1 and actually went up that day as a result. I think -- again from memory -- that's the year Claridge shinned us out of the playoff final at Wembley. DO you remember the song: King Kenny, King Kenny, King Kenny Brown, He scored the goal, That sent Charlton down. He'd scored for West Ham againt the Clowns the previous season? Apologies for the digression!

On the playing side, hiring a manager with a reputation for enjoying a heavy night out wasn't particularly astute. Replacing him with a home grown novice was either astute or lucky or a bit of both. Losing that novice when he turned out to be highly capable certainly wasn't astute, and getting promoted given our form after he'd left was far more luck than judgment. Losing the replacement manager in less than a year was many things and astute wasn't one of them. Taking four weeks to replace him was a mixed bag; the final choice of replacement was astute; had we persuaded him to come four weeks earlier, we might be in the top 10 by now.
This can be debated for evermore but, whatever happened or was presented to DF after Bolton spoke to him officially and unofficially, it turns out SP hasn't made a bad call. DF at Bolton has gone on very bad runs, followed by good runs, then back to very long bad runs. His squad are amazing, cr&p, amazing, cr&p, and this includes those there before him and those he's purchased for £6mil in total. The luck didn't stop at what you've said. We were very lucky we had Popovic at the club because without him we'd have no Jedinak. We're lucky Garvan turned down B&HA, and Mortitz turned up for a trial after the Rangers disagreement. Without those 2 there'd be no promotion, no number 10, no Murray in fantastic form, and probably another back 6, another Chris Martin in the gap, and Jermaine Easter 50 yards away from the back 6. DF sorted out most of the rest but without those players we'd be mid-table at best, nothing more. On IH. 2010 appointing him wasn't luck, and winning the play offs was not 'luck.' We controlled the 2nd leg and the final. No goals conceded, no hearts in mouths, we deserved it. Signing KP and Dobbie was not luck either, the sort of signings you need to add a new dimension to a team chasing a tangible result, which is what where we are now. The people who believe we would've strolled the league in the top 2 are deluding themselves. I bet if you trawl through the threads, most were expecting a play off finish. This luck thing crossed my mind yesterday. It happened after thinking how euphoric HOL is after a win, and how down some are after a loss, and how we might review the last 4 years if we survuve. Anyway, 2010 have had some things go very smoothly and slot into place at the right time, but IH was not 'luck.' He was promoted once, almost survived, and then reached the play offs again after changing a lot of the squad. Unfortunately the task of changing a team from Champ to Prem when you've lost all of your front 4 due to transfers, injuries (long or short-term), and the 2 number 10's deemed not athletic enough (Garvan), or not defensively reliable enough (moritz), IH isn't up to it. Too much all at once. Ideally we could've had IH for when the experience in promotion was needed and DF when conservative defending is needed, but DF is always preserving his own career and I'd much rather have TP who just says things how they are and without all the flannel.

Good post, Rudi. Only thing I would say is that I agree winning the playoffs was not luck, but getting into them in the first place (given our form between December and May) most certainly was luck. Very few teams on the sort of run we had for four months will ever make the playoffs. That we took our chance once we got there, though, was not at all down to luck. That was grabbing the opportunity with both hands.

Agree with these posts. I am still puzzled that we scraped into the playoffs and think we were lucky that our rivals were dropping points too. We won the playoffs thanks to two inspired performances - Brighton away and Wembley. I just wonder how that happened. Did IH suddenly find a way to motivate the players and/or come up with the right technical advice? Or did the players give themselves a collective lift? I think it was a lot to do with Zaha, wanting to go out on a high and also feeling he could deliver a great performance for Palace as thanks for what it had done for him.

I'm not complaining about that but lets not all start pretending it was all down to business acumen! Absolutely correct. I'm sure that our current owners are astute businessmen in so far as you don't achieve success or amass a fortune (either/or) as they have without a degree of astuteness, but they haven't particularly shown it, or needed to show it, at Palace. On the playing side, the Zaha sale was luck more than judgment (the current owners merely cashed in on him; they didn't develop him) though you could argue they were astute to sell when his value was high. In terms of incoming players they've brought in a mixed bag. Not much astute business there, though. On the non-playing side they've done what's required to bring the ground up to Premiership requirements; they had no choice but to do that so it's not astute. I believe some improvements have been made to facilities generally and if so, that would be a sensible step. But it's not astute as it so obviously needed doing that only a fool would not have done so. All in all, our owners have done a good, professional, competent job off the pitch. Astuteness not really required; an idiot can tell most of our facilities are paleolithic and that negatively impacts prospective revenue. They've actually done an average to poor job with managers but they've had real rub of the green and the team has punched above its weight, good fortune they've benefitted from too. We have decent owners who support the club, work hard, and have their hearts in the right place. They're far more good than bad and many clubs have a lot worse, But heroes, Gods, perfect, or deserving of unquestioned praise? Not for me. Excellent post - and Steve P has said on a number of occasions that he finds constructive criticism/discussion useful, as you would expect. I think this thread has, in the main, been understood as a discussion, which is refreshing by recent standards. Too often people see a post as a defining opinion. For example I get accused of being a sycophant - but the truth is that I only engage with certain types of posts (to stop myself being on HOL as much as I used to be - I have a job and a sort of life, plus I do the radio so don't want to give out Hambo overkill) . The threads/posts I pick tend to be where I think someone has something wrong or is being unfair. So when I, or others, defend the board for example, automatically some people assume that this means a lack of acceptance of criticism. The same is often true when I observe people making salient, but perceptibly "negative" posts. There is tendency for people to dismiss those out of hand way too often rather than to engage/ HOL is at it's best when people are willing to discuss an issue - and accept that the end result is not always going to be an agreement. Trolls can sometimes make that a little tricky (you know who you are) - but most of the time it's just people talking, united by a shared interest/obsession. Some of my favourite posters, past and present, have been those I disagree with more often than not but who debate issues properly. It's what the site is all about IMO. More please. Well I always disagree with everything you say Hambo but on this occasion.....

I'm pretty sure Pulis said at the end of December that we needed to do our business early but as there's about a week to go and no one has come in I'm a little concerned that we don't act like we did in the summer. Personally I'd prefer no one to come in than do mad dash deals on the final day for anyone and everyone that is willing to come to us. Surely we had targets before the window opened and some to fall back on? It seems we are now trudging through the Championship for some half decent buys...if there are any? TBH that can be said about virtually every other PL team other than Hull (two over-priced deals). Chelsea and Man U have managed to get one deal each, and Cardiff seem to have a job-lot of Scandinavians. Still think we only need one CB, a striker if poss and a decent wide player (actually if Thomas could stay fit for the rest of the season, I don't think we would need another wideman). However if we end up with no new strikers but have Murray and Wibs in the 25 to support Jerome/Chamakh/Gayle, I don't think that's the end of the world...think we will make an interesting last day signing though
