Great to see this mentioned on here. I remember being thrown out of the Holmesdale for throwing a toilet roll that didn't unroll and hit a policeman on the back of his neck. (not amused). I still watched the game by going up the other end.

Not quite connected to bog-rolls and rattles, but something else you don't see anymore,i.e. half-time charity collections involving 4 people each holding a corner of a blanket into which the spectators are invited to throw their spare change. Of course not everyone can throw properly so not much fun if you were down the front being peppered with shrapnel. And, if I am not mistaken, many coins were aimed at the collectors rather than the blanket.

Also the half time results from around the grounds. The programme showed game A was Arsenal v WBA, and game B was Chelsea v Spurs, game C Derby v Everton etc. Someone would put the scores for games A, B, C, etc on boards by the advertisement hoardings.

We lived next door to an old house that was pulled down near Crystal Palace Parade in 1958. We raided the old place and nicked a load of those bells used to summon the servants upstairs to pour the tea etc. My Dad found them and took the biggest and hung Claret and Blue ribbons on the top and we used to go up to Selhurst to support the Palace with it. Then there was only the old stand and half mud, half concrete terraces and we stood up the Holmesdale ringing our bell. When the old fella died me and me bruvva rescued the bell and my missus insists it has a position of respect in the house. I use it to call her when I want a cup of tea!

Still got my rattle somewhere in the attic, black and white with claret and blue ribbons. It cost me about 7 bob from a sports shop that used to be in S Norwood High Street, just beyond the Portland Road traffic lights. Spent hours painting it. We used to nick ticket rolls from bus garages and throw those at matches - much more accurate and longer than bog rolls. Happy Days!!
The crowd is outstanding, and especially with the penalty after 44 minutes it was clear when we came out after half-time the welcome would be pretty loud and not too friendly. Crystal Palace wanted to strike back, so that was all clear. This is a wonderful place to play football - Jurgen Klopp |

Yes, my Dad would give me coppers to throw at the blanket but it was the Sally woman in the bonnet I would aim at. She must have been a good soul 'cos she was there again later in the match and a year later clutching her bit of blanket. Bet she said, back at base, "took a hit for God today!"

A much missed art the flying bog roll Never saw a stand outside the ground selling bog rolls - would have made a fortune ! In those days there used to be lady selling peanuts on the Holmesdale terrace.
