November this year sees the 60th anniversary of the greatest result in Great Yarmouth football history...

... in front of over 8,000 spectators Great Yarmouth Town defeated professional side Crystal Palace 1-0 in the FA Cup.

The Bloaters still hold the record of being the only Eastern Counties team to knock a professional club out of the biggest club football competition in the world.

Now, Great Yarmouth Town FC want your memories for an updated souvenir programme. If you were at the game, or even took part in some capacity or maybe a relative was one of the players we would love to hear from you.

We are planning to use as many of your memories and pictures as possible to build a complete story of the day. We are also looking to find a copy of the original programme as the club unfortunately does not have one.

If you have any stories or memorabilia to share please email me at mcdegz@gmail.com

Thanks.

Derek Bird

Assistant Secretary

Derek
I have a programme and also an action press photo of this game, later today I'll copy the press photo for you and email it over - and also post it on this site.
Re the programme, I'm happy to loan mine to you if you like.
Just to put this result into some perspective, Palace lost against non-league teams 3 times in a row in the FA Cup - Finchley 52/3, Gt Yarmouth 53/4 & Bishop Auckland 54/5. In our history we have also lost to Yeovil (twice) and Margate. So we may be in several "greatest result" stories!
I'll also copy in the club's historian as he is sure to have some details for you.
Good luck with this project, it sounds great.
Pete

Here's the photo I promised the GT Yarmouth man

Not quite sure who the Palace player is closest to the camera (right) - it may be Ernie Randell - but it's Bob Thomas just behind the keeper's leg.

Possibly Ted Broughton.

Open to correction but think that Mel Blyth had a spell at Yarmouth. Possibly Mike Bailey the ex Charlton and Wolves player was another?

Pretty sure it's not Broughton as he wasn't listed as playing in my book.

A pic of Randell is attached.

Mel Blyth certainly started at Yarmouth but I don't know about Mike Bailey.

Indeed it is and it hasn't changed one bit.

It is believed to be the oldest stand still in use.

In fact, as it is a Grade II listed building from this September, it has been included in the Great Yarmouth heritage list of places to visit. See here : [Link] or [Link]

My geography was a bit awry with Mike Bailey,on reflection I think he started with Gorleston not Yarmouth ...just down the road from Yarmouth though!

The town also gave us older fans a love to hate referee a certain Norman Burtenshaw.
