A year before I was born, but, I also was given a program as a gift, just how many we're printed. You'd have thought it would be rare....

I remember the game clearly. A full house saw Real play their first team with Di Stefano,Puskas,Gento, Santa Maria and all. We had just sold Johnny Byrne to West Ham for a British record fee but he was allowed to play for us that night. Madrid were 4-0 up at half-time with all the goals right in front of me at the Holmesdale end. Puskas scored with a thunderbolt free kick from outside the area and I was right in line with it - he belted it into a gap just big enough for the ball to get through. Madrid changed their team completely for the second half and we pulled 3 goals back including Terry Long's shot. I think Johnny Byrne got one as well. So all 7 goals were at the Holmesdale end !
How the hell Palace got this team to play at Selhurst at that time was amazing and I have always had a soft spot for RM since that day.

As I kept telling every Cherries fan I met last week it was 3-4 on that foggy night and the Glaziers gave Gento and company a real match. And I can still see Terry Long's piledriver fly into the net - it is right up there on the glorious goal podium along with Ambrose's goal at Old Trafford last year. The Real Madrid match was to officially open the floodlights on top of the old stand - you can still see the supports up there I think. Still treasure the programme and the memory of seeing Johnny Byrne on the same pitch as Puskas.

It is always the question of money....

I'm sure I read somewhere that Palace had to guarantee Real Madrid £10,000 for the appearance - an absolute fortune in those days..

I think £10k is about right. It was to open our new floodlights, seen on the attached as the Madrid side line up - the legendary "Galloping Major" Puskas nearest camera, the equally legendary Di Stefano 4th left.

I thought the new floodlights were the ones at the Whitehorse End, not the ones on top of the Old Stand which were there earlier (we had floodlit friendlies through the 50's)- but I stand corrected if I'm wrong.

I was just 6 when this game took place, I hadn't been to a game at this stage, and I may have gone had it not been bucketing down with rain. But it wasn't to be - however, mum relented the following Saturday - home v Port Vale, D 0-0 - my first game.

2 action photos to follow.

First action shot again shows the effects of the new lights, and Brian Wood 5 is challenging their No 7, who I presume to be Tejada. You can make out Johnny Byrne far left, and Andy Smillie not as far left.

Second action photo shows Johnny Byrne in our superb kit, Johnny was loaned back to us for the game having completed his move to West Ham a month earlier. The Madrid player clearing is right back Casado.

I went to the game and have a programme which does not feature the date of the game at all.

Yes I was there and remember it well. Fog, torrential rain and great goals with Terry Long's being an absolute stunner. Despite the weather, it was a full house and the atmosphere was as good as any that we have experienced at Palace in recent years. The new floodlights were not bad either. I have still got my programme of the match and I don't think that it is particularly rare but would not want to offload it anyway.
