Sir Steve managed us through the most successful period in our club's history, coming within 7 minutes of winning the FA Cup against Man Utd and guiding us to a 3rd place finish in the old First Division. He put together one of the most exciting squads we've ever seen, with the likes of Wright, Bright, Thomas, Salako and Nigel Martyn at its heart.

The many and varied other things he did for Palace are too numerous to mention, but suffice to say he will always be remembered as an absolute legend at our club, despite managing our fiercest rivals, which says a lot about the high regard he is held in by the Palace faithful.

Happy Birthday Sir Steve of Selhurst!

Many thanks, excellent. I thought that this is well worth re-producing on my forum, your name and the Holmesdale credited!

The only - and I mean the only - things I would have liked to have been different during all his years at Palace are a) To have dispensed with the long-ball game when we had a squad of very good footballers around 1991 rather than carrying it on and soon being found out which led to relegation not that long after. Our crowds were very low because the entertainment value was not good even when we came third.

And b) To have played Madden as much as possible rather than sparingly and, it seemed at the time, begrudgingly.

Other than that an amazing manager who brought us some great lifelong memories.

I heard he was banging Noades missus (so were most of the squad) which is why he went to Maidstone United

Trivial fact - Palace used to win 5-1 at least once a season, maybe next season?
