I like the middle class names like Lettuce, Florrie and DIRTBOX. That last one's the middle of something at least.
I used to go there alot as a kid. Uncle Sam's Hamburgers were really good. There was a massive record shop in Churchill Square too.
Growing up in the Kenley/Caterham area it was always a 45 minute car journey away if Saturday night got a bit dull. Brighton always seemed to have an allure of The Seaside Town you go to to get your kicks. Something exciting or dangerous could happen. An unexpected top night would often take place at the end of the M23.
In Quadrophenia when the bikes stop on Devil's Dyke overlooking the town and Jimmy says "That is Brighton, my son!" it was a saying banded about my friends for years.
Strangely nobody I knew who went to live there made too much of a song and dance about it. This article could be about many, many places in England today. But Brighton always seemed to be immune from such criticism. Not anymore it seems.

With football it's a great rivalry with Palace and I enjoy the rivalry mainly because it means so much to both teams and everyone else doesn't understand it. The town of Brighton certainly sounds like it needs cheering up. A new stadium looked to have done the trick but Palace's brilliant 1-3 win in September 2011 simply stunned them into mediocrity and long may it continue.
