I'm a bit confused about which of these was an enigmatic jazz musician/saxophone player. Harrison, who died, 5 or so years ago, features in a biography 'Brushes with the greats' by Kevin Smallbone which I have ordered. He was clearly an educated and talented footballer/cricketer as documented in Wikipedia. Although it appears that a lot of the time he was too busy to train there is no mention of any musical expertise. He transferred to Southampton in 1959 which was not a great move as he became Terry Paine's understudy. His place at Palace was taken by Gerry Priestl(e)y (spelling in question) who also briefly features in Wikipedia and I wonder if he might have been the musician. Harrison would appear to be the favourite but whoever it was apparently used to play in a night/jazz club to supplement his meagre wages, not the best preparation for a game the next day, and would occasionally go AWOL. Anyone remember these two?

I remember them both very well but I'm afraid I don't have a clue which one of them was a musician.

I have the Harrison book "Brushes with The Greats" and there's no mention at all of music. It's a very interesting read about one of a dying breed of sportsmen. It could be Priestly as I know nothing of him. However, he joined us in 1958 from Grimsby and 2 years later left us and joined Halifax, neither of which sounds the sort of place associated with jazz clubs, but I guess the truth is out there somewhere.

That almost certainly rules out Harrison. Do you have a picture of Priestly? I'm now clutching at straws to trigger the ailing grey matter!

No picture sadly. Missing a team photo of his seasons. Sorry.

Attached is a pic of Priestly taken from the Palace v Shrewsbury programme, Dec 1958. Better than nothing? Much better than nothing. There does appear to be a similarity with Harrison which may account for the confusion, that's my excuse anyway. Having now received the book, as you say there is no reference to music. So I'm now tending to lean towards Priestl(e)y being the musical "maestro." Many thanks.
