Brian Bason played against us in that famous match in 1973 when Jim Cannon scored on his debut for us against Chelsea. He won ITV's 'Goal of the Season' with a cracker against Carlisle in the 75/76 season But then the next season had his leg broken in a League Cup match at Highbury ,in front of about 55,000. He was out for ages and ,as is so often the case, was never really the same player after ,as we all found out to our cost. Hope he is keeping well.

Sorry, I apologise to Brian Bason. (I've actually got a photo of him and Jim Cannon from an open day in the mid-80s somewhere).

Bason's goal for Chelsea against Carlisle was absolute piledriver, he did score once for us though?

Poor poor player in an even worse team. The dismantling of our 79 promotion team was the most absurd and criminal period in the history of our club. Those with short memories will cite Administration as our darkest times but they'd be wrong. Attendances of 4-5000? How we ever stayed up in Div 2 will always astound me.

I remember the name but not how he played.

He looks like Oliver Hardy and over weight!

i remember this goal, never used to miss the big match, its on youtube, scroll through to 05.15,note an 18 year old ray wilkins in the studio

i loved chelsea's deep goal frames back then as well.

as for those who think humphrey was better than hinshelwood, i'm afraid for me humphrey was steady at best and was no-where near in the same class as doris,i can't believe it can even be debated.

plus doris invented the sliding tackle i'm sure he used to go flying in from all distances and still come out with the ball.

humphrey was better than bason,i'll give you that

Doris was wholehearted but I can't agree he was a better full back than Humphrey. Humphrey was very consistent for us, a good player.

Bason made Steve Ketteridge look quality, that's how bad he was.
