Many thanks for posting that link sash. Really enjoyed that, was at that match a frezzing cold saturday afternoon standing in the new stand enclousure. Great match even though we lost and on match of the day as well which was as rare as rocking horse s*** in those days. And at least half the team of the 80s were still in the side as well, and in my opinion we were wearing the best kit we ever had. We nearly went down that season aswell,we had to beat burnley at selhurst in our last game in front of 22,000. f*** knows where they all came from because we were lucky to get 7000 at home that season. And with mullary as manager to boot. Dark days indeed.

gawd 30 years ago. Remember the game well. Stood in the AW under the tv gantry. But what's a real p1sser is that only 40 months earlier was that 51,000 crowd and our sparking future.

Me and my mates used to go "George" like Yoofa Joycewhen he came in...... it used to annoy him...LOL

Great to watch Vince Hillaire taking on and going past players, plus a great strike by Doris. What a clanger by Baron. Thanks for posting Sash.
A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, at my age, I don't even buy green bananas! |

Cheers Sash. I was in the Holmesdale kiddie bit right at the front, right behind Barron and his circus act for their equaliser. Us being on TV was a rare event then, being 2 up and losing with that Barron mistake made it feel all the more embarrassing. Nice to hear Barry Davis make reference on more than one occasion to the Palace fans singing in the Arthur. Mullery puffing away on the bench too, the final Palace boss to smoke on the touchline. Cigars wasn't it?

Its hard to see such an empty ground after what were fabulous times late 70's to 1980 Bubbs..how quickly it all changed and fell apart It was so quick and very hard to take especially for those of us that came into the picture around 77/78, and thought 20,000 crowds and exciting football was just how it was. The Whitehorse downsizing and getting renovated added to the depressive 'ghost town' feel around Selhurst at that time. The season after that Wolves game was even worse: remember being at quite a few 5,000 home gates and even a Saturday 4,000 one at home to Middlebrough - great game that one, had Mabbutt and Gilbert sent off in a space of a minute and still ended up winning 1-0. As fast and painful as that decline was between 1980-82, Coppell's revolution was not as fast but still managed to reverse it back in a short space of time. Mullery's last game for us was a home match against Blackburn where the crowd was 5,078. Five seasons later in '89, our final game of that season also against Blackburn attracted 30,000.

26,000 Bubbs. Although not a bad crowd by any means it was still only half of the previous promotion decider. Cracking day that. And what's good is being able to remember a lot of it unlike Burnley.

Right about Burnley: was there too although my memories of that night are nowhere near as clear and vivid as the Blackburn game.
