I was showing this photo to my Dad yesterday to see if he recognised the players. From left to right he came up with Stuart Imlach, Terry Long, Unknown, Alan Stephenson, Fred Lucas ?, Cliff Holton (facing away), Unknown. Does anyone recognise the unknown faces? A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, at my age, I don't even buy green bananas! |

Yes, here goes - left to right:- You can just see Bill Glazier's face far left on the edge, Stuart Imlach, Terry Long, Brian Whitehouse, Alan Stephenson, Fred Lucas, Brian Wood behind (not Holton), Billy Birch. Your photo ends there. My photo goes further for some reason:- Ronnie Allen (9), Bobby Kellard, Don Townsend. Missing from this photo who played in the game (v. Oldham) - Bert Howe, George Petchey, Cliff Holton, Peter Burridge. In typical Plaace fashion, we failed to win any of our last 7 games and ended as runners-up on goal average when one win would have won us the title. Attachment: CP 63-4 promoted.jpg (265.91Kb)

PalacePhotoman, many thanks for filling in the gaps, the correction on Brian Wood for Cliff Holton & also the for the wider photo showing a few additional faces. I got my photo from the Centenary DVD and simply paused it & took a picture from my phone so not too high tech! Cliff Holton was my Dad's favourite player of that era, as well as Peter Burridge & Bill Glazier. My Dad went to most games that season including Watford away when we lost 3-1. On the way back he & my uncle scrounged a lift back on the team Coach. As my uncle had a cold, Dick Graham told them to sit right at the back & not to talk to the players! Happy days.

That was my first season going to Selhurst. Grass banks at top of Holmesdale terrace and the same where the Arthur Wait stand is now.

This was my first season supporting "the glaziers". I was at the Oldham game. It was a bit of a disappointment - I think we took the lead with a Holton penalty? but then allowed Ledger ( I think) to spoil the show with a hat-trick. Coventry thereby won the 3rd Div. title leaving 27,000 of us with a mixture of elation and deflation. But, Palace have rarely done it the easy way.

Your reference to the grass banks reminded me, particularly as there is a Vic Rouse post running, that in those days a couple of players used to 'do the gardening' on those banks during the summer. I used to travel home from school on the 68 bus via Whitehorse Lane and used to see Vic and Len Choules doing that work, presumably for a small amount of money during the close season. How things have changed.
lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright. |

Looking at the photo of the team after the Oldham match got me to thinking why Palace didn't play in their all white strip that afternoon. They wore their tangerine shirts. Oldham's shirts were predominantly blue I seem to recall so I'm not sure why Palace made the change.

I seem to remember that the highlights at least were shown on television which would have been very rare for a 3rd Div game. It might have something to do with that.

Palace had a good run of away games wearing the tangerine so sort of adopted it as a lucky home kit for a while. But then we lost twice at home (Barnsley & Oldham) so that put paid to that!

I didn't get a prog but I am reliably informed that there was a half-page tribute to Dave Sexton with the photo on the link.
