When I first went to Selhurst Park as a nipper 67 years ago the match ball was raffled every saturday. Each ticket cost a penny and at half-time the winning ticket number would be announced. I am not sure how many tickets were usually sold but I have a feeling they sold enough tickets to cover the cost of the ball and then some. I think in those days a new ball cost slightly less than a quid so with gates of between ten and fifteen thousand this was probably a pretty good business for the Club.Another interesting money spinner was probably the add which appeared in the match programme where the teams were printed for Ellerman's Athletic Rub. I believe it had rather a pungent smell but I never did try it. If there is still somebody out there who rembers Penny on The Ball or used Ellerman's please join in on these memories of bygone days.

Following on from the penny on the ball tickets they had what I think were called Ball & Booster tickets. I used to help my mates Dad sell them on the grass banks of the Whitehorse by the turnstiles. I think they were either sixpence or a shilling, to long ago to remember exactly.

My dad used to sell them in the late 50`s early 60`s at the Whitehorse end turnstiles, about where the club shop / Sainsburys entrance is now. We used to get in free for doing it. I don`t know how many they used to sell overall, but he used to sell around 30 bob to 2 quids worth most games, and I think there were 2 sellers at most turnstile blocks. The ones that followed were called jackpot tickets, and they were sixpence each. I know because I was selling them myself by then. It was a good crack: free admission plus 10% of your takings. Very happy days.
Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link] |

Didn't use Ellimans, but another rub called fiery jack. For a laugh I used to smear it on someone elses shorts before the game to get their knackers all irritated and sore. It was good on a freezing cold day to rub on your legs to get the circulation going.

Ten minutes later he was in a right old state, whilst myself and the other lad were in stitches.
