Brilliant debut!! But that was before we'd offered him a contract. Went down hill rapidly after that.

He was overweight and past his best.

He was one of a few foreigners who came to boost their pay packets, and turned out to be 'crap'.

Padovano was the worst of them!

A new era of total football is on the way to Selhurst Park!!

I'm one of the people defending Brolin on that yahoo story. The pondlife replying on there is incredible in their ignorance.
Brolin was my favourite player growing up, due to the fact I lived in Sweden for a few years and support their national team. He was voted the best foreign player in Serie A during his time at unfashionable Parma, and propelled Sweden to third in WC '94. The best performance I've ever seen in the flesh was his masterful display in a WC qualifier, when he scored 3 and created every move of note in a win over Israel in Stockholm. He oozed class and was a playmaker midfielder.
Unfortunately for him, and not often reported in the piss-take English articles that pop up from time to time, is the fact that prior to signing to Leeds he has his leg broken in an international match against Hungary (after setting up two goals if I remember correctly). After that, he was never the same player and put weight on whilst he waited for his leg to recover (not an easy process when it's held together by pins).
I was very excited when he came to England and recall that he played a few blinders on first arriving at Leeds, whilst playing a central role. He explains in the article what went wrong after that, and I believe that the experience of being banned from his own club and not getting playing time is what lead to his weight ballooning further.
His time at Palace wasn't great. I was at uni at the time and it's one of my biggest regrets that I didn't get back to London to see a game he played in, as I assumed he'd be around a bit longer than he was. Everyone remembers the game against Leeds when we got hammered, and he took a ball in the face that made his bandage explode! The fact that he had only come to Palace to train and hadn't really expected to play isn't often reported, so again he just gets remembered as a fat foreign mercenery. It's a real shame.

And yes, he played one game in goal in the lower leagues in Sweden after his time at Palace. His brother Hakan played for the same team and Tomas played in goal as a bit of a media stunt. He, along with the rest of the 1994 World Cup squad (Thomas Ravelli, Roland Nilsson, Joachim Bjorklund, Klas Ingesson, Kenneth Andersson etc) are all held in very high esteem in Sweden, and rightly so.

He definitely had quality but obviously the weight problem affected his game.
