I seem to vaguely recall qualification was on the lines of the 2 teams in each division who had scored the most league goals by the end of September rather than form.Just as well it was never held again as we would never qualify in a million years.

the qualification was based on a clubs results during a certain period of the 1987/88 season (I think 16 games) and featured 16 teams - 8 from the old 1st division, 4 from the old 2nd division and 2 each from the old 3rd and 4th divisions

this is from wikipedia - [Link]

i was there , didn't think i would ever be going there as a palace fan again , wolves were down the other end and we were singing to each other ( they had the most fans as far as i can remember ) , and directly to our right was man u , enjoyed that ( where's your famous cockney reds ) and a song that sticks in my mind is " beer , beer , we want more beer , get another round in over here " , good times !!

psst , your my favourite , don't tell anyone , @mightypalace

Aah..the Mercantile Credit tournement. Yes, I was there, and yes we went out on pens to Sheff W. We had the largest number of fans there on the day, I recall.

Anally I collect ticket stubs, somewhere I still have it. If I remember rightly, it was larger than most stubs, light cream with orange and green on one side?

When i see him, it's gonna be painful. Skinny little cont.

This has bought back great memories. There was a mini league within the league in each division. Top two qualified i think. We did at the expense of Millwall. I remeber getting my tickets (It was over two days from memory. Sat/Sun) If we had won then we had to return the next day for the finals
I think we waited until 5pm for palace to run out and then lost on Pens (Definately PB missed)
I rememeber being in the next block to Luton, who had next to no fans, and joining them for their game
It was great to see Palace's first wembley appearance
Didn't bother going on the Sunday though!!

The qualification was 8 from the old first division, 4 from the second division, and 2 each from the third and fourth division. As usual, Palace left it until the last minute to qualify.

We must have ended up in the Luton section together. I remember the baffled looks on the faces of their supporters when a load of Palace supporters walked into their section and sat down, and promptly began taking the piss out of them for the hats their supporters were wearing, including the classic song 'Whose the prat in the silly hat'.
