Nice article on Bruce Dyer on the front page. I used to live 5 doors down from him in West Croydon, and I remember being a young annoying little sod asking for his autograph whilst he was moving in. He was going through unopened boxes of stuff looking for a pen. After becoming the first million-pound teenager it would have been easy to let it get to your head but he always came across as grounded and polite. Top bloke!

One of my favourite players. But aren't they all when you are 15!

Not long ago Bruce had a house in Purley just off the Purley Way.

He was a total enigma and never achieved anything like his true potential.

Ray Lewington once told me that defences were terrrified of his pace and physical presence which he showed occasional flashes of. You wonder if perhaps, like Emile Heskey and Theo Walcott, he was really too nice and lacked that real passion, endeavour and arrogance that generally makes a successful player.

Whenever Palace/Watford games come up I always remember the great Cliff Holton.

lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright.

I remember Alan Smith's quote about Dyer: "He's got a heart like a dustbin."

Used to be one of my favourite players too - I was oblivious to the fact he was rubbish.

Ask me about Ronald de Boer.

I was about 10/11 and always liked Ricky Newman. f*** knows why!! Also thought Leif Anderson was half-decent. Think I may have been confusing him for Herman...

Some nice footage there! Is it just me or did he score a hat-trick against Reading away, when we beat them 6-1?
