I used to travel on the trains that were organised by Maurice Drewitt and Chris Plummer. ( still get glimpses of Chris at home games, whatever happened to Maurice after he stopped being groundsman at Mitcham ? ). Then I moved onto the coaches - Gerry Mansfield was the Steward on my coach and eventually Big Dave ( R.I.P. )...Robbie from the Box Office was a regular, as was Joyce the Voice and her husband Doug. My parents, Audrey and Guy were also regulars. Anyone else on here used to travel on that one coach ?

Noades sacked Maurice, not sure what for but there was a protest at the time. Chris Plummer still attends games and sits in the main stand block C. Anyone remember Maskells coaches?

anyone remember Bournemouth away in 87? 2-0 down and won 3-2 ! what a game Wright and Brighty had so many one on ones we could have had ten!!!
2-0 down very early on (conceded the first after 1 minute!) ,with the Bournemouth fans singing 'Your so s*** it's unbelievable'. Then all hell breaks out in our end on the terraces between Palace fans and the police and stewards. Not sure how it stated but suddenley loads of Palace fans were being forcibly ejected left right and centre! It was farcicle and was almost like a scene out of a Monty Python film. Anyway, amid the chaos the players somehow managed to bang in 3 goals before half time (Bright 2, Thomas) and we went in 3-2 up at half time singing back to Bournemouth: 'Your so s*** it's unbelievable!'. The 2nd half had no more goals but i have never witnessed so many clear cut missed opportunities in all my days. Bright and Wright were ripping them to shreds - even Barber was getting in on the act, but we squandered chance after chance. I just remember so many one on ones being placed agonisingly wide or blazed over. It got to the last few minutes still unbelievably only 1 goal ahaead, so you can imagine what we were all thinking: 'they're bound to equalise'. And they so very nearly did right at the death, missing a glaring chance just as embarrassing as all of ours. I also remember massive trouble erupting outside the ground that day. I always feel so blessed that i was old enough to follow Palace between 1987 - 1991. Four years of the most unbelievable entertainment. Every week something new and memorable seemed to be happening. Every season packed enough incident to cover another clubs whole history. If i ever wrote a book on it, those of you who weren't around then would swear I've over exaggerated.

Apart from so many great away days in the late 80's, two earlier 80's ones stick in my mind: 1984 Sheff Wed 0-1 Wednesday needed at least a draw to win promotion to the top flight after many years away. Probably the loudest crowd i've ever heard - it was literally painful to listen to at times. The view of the Wednesday-ites in the Kop from our empty Leppings Lane end was one i'll never forget - so tightly packed, they were like a swarm of bees. It was a Mel Stirland pen that won it after a Billy Gilbert foul. We had nothing riding on it, so it was one of those days where you didn't mind losing because of the spectacle you witnessed. and somewhere out the crowd came Pardew..... |

I was at that one Bubbs. I remember a copper coming onto the coach before the game and saying something along the lines off..."If wednesday get the point they need, it'll be party time, if they don't........" I cannot remember what he said, I had a fair idea though - I was to busy with my head in my hands and thinking oh my gawd, we are going to die....!! Agree your reference to the noise, it was unreal. I remember going to a midweek game at Port Vale in the late seventies just before we were named "the team of the eighties". It was our promotion season (78/79?) from the old 3rd division under Terry Venables. Not only did we get stuffed 4.1 with George Graham getting sent off, but also it was a terrible journey there and back involving train to Crewe (I think?) followed by coach to and from the ground. On the way back at the train station I was told off by two coppers for playing football with a tin can on the platform whilst waiting for the train. What a hooligan I was back then? That was also the last time we lost that season as well with Jeff Bourne scoring our one goal and then scoring another 12 or so and us winning at Wrexham 4.2 and gaining promotion after Wrexham failing to win there last game in hand at home to Mansfield a week later. If I remember correctly there was less than 50 Palace fans that horrible night at Port Vale.

I think there were a few more than 50 at Port Vale because there were two coaches, one broke down on the way back and everyone piled on to the other coach. I usualy went by train very unusual for me to be on a coach. I remember a spectacular diving header og that night as well. Another dreadful evening away a few years earlier was Rotherham, got stuffed, two sent off (JC was one I think),it snowed and there must have only been about 50 Palace but that was the seventies. Great memories though.
