He was terrible going forward for Man United - that's why he had to go and they took a £35m hit on the transfer fee He did ok for them because they were terrible so he had to do quite a bit of the classic defensive full back role for them - which is his strength But a wing back? Not a chance. I've done a lot of calculations and Munoz is exactly two hundred times better than him in that role. And as a right CB in a three? Who knows? He's not played there so a risk. And we already have Clyne as cover. What is highly amusing is that the West Ham 'Academy' rubbish is totally dead and buried. Buying a traditional big man up front and non-attacking full backs. He did ok for them because they were terrible so he had to do quite a bit of the classic defensive full back role for them - which is his strength

But a wing back? Not a chance. I've done a lot of calculations and Munoz is exactly two hundred times better than him in that role.

And as a right CB in a three? Who knows? He's not played there so a risk. And we already have Clyne as cover.

What is highly amusing is that the West Ham 'Academy' rubbish is totally dead and buried. Buying a traditional big man up front and non-attacking full backs. The new Wimbledon!

I see this neither as a "missed opportunity" nor as a bullet dodged. He was a very good defender during his time with us. By all accounts he is still very good. We also know that he is not the most dynamic overlapping full back or wing back; to compare him in this respect with the likes of Van Arnholt or Munoz would not be favourable to him. So assuming we play in the same shape this season as we did with OG last season, would we be expecting him to compete with Munoz? In that case he would not be first choice. Would we be expecting him to operate as Ward or Clyne did last year in a back three? I've never seen him do this before so that would be an unknown. Overall, I suspect there are better options elsewhere albeit I do really like him as a player.

No Why do I say that? 1. I think he was spoilt at Man U and is looking for a bigger club than Palace 2. I suspect he would want far bigger wages in future years than we would be prepared to pay him 3. I doubt he would come back to be on the sub's bench as a back-up to Munoz. 4. We have better and cheaper emergency CB options in Clyne and Ward (and probably Holding) 5. WE have more pressing needs in other areas if we were to spend £15m.

Why do I say that?
1. I think he was spoilt at Man U and is looking for a bigger club than Palace
2. I suspect he would want far bigger wages in future years than we would be prepared to pay him
3. I doubt he would come back to be on the sub's bench as a back-up to Munoz.
4. We have better and cheaper emergency CB options in Clyne and Ward (and probably Holding)
5. WE have more pressing needs in other areas if we were to spend £15m.

Built in the mould of a Hodgson team, if you like playing with 4 centre backs across your back four with little to no freedom to go forward he is excellent, as a wingback? nah. The mountains are calling & I must go.

AWB will do fine at the Spam but he does not suit our tactics. One more point

Possibly the best 1v1 RB in the league but ironically criticised for his attacking play (given he started life as a winger). In a flat 4-4-2, with little to no attacking onus, great player. We do not play like that anymore however and I'd fail to see where he'd fit in. Never quite added any more feathers to his cap. I actually think WHU is a move more beneficial for him and I wish him luck without the desire to see him return. Saw an interview with Allardyce who really stuck up for AWB and I surprisingly agreed with his analysis.

Possibly the best 1v1 RB in the league but ironically criticised for his attacking play (given he started life as a winger).

In a flat 4-4-2, with little to no attacking onus, great player. We do not play like that anymore however and I'd fail to see where he'd fit in.

Never quite added any more feathers to his cap. I actually think WHU is a move more beneficial for him and I wish him luck without the desire to see him return.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Undoubtedly.

Utd's error in signing him (and Maguire) is that he is great in a lower table teams where his main objective is to make a load of tackles and blocks. Top half teams need to lean more towards defenders that can play.

Only because Utd have paid off the deficit to AWB somewhere in the region of £5.75m I believe.
