Guehi is a superstar player and generational talent. He is worth superstar money. Unless a club makes a massive bid for him, why on earth should we sell him? He could be the difference between mediocrity and Europe. Shall we improve our bank balance by selling them too? I know that would make you happy and probably send us to the Championship. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (13 Aug 2024 4.02pm) If you accept Wharton is a superstar player, how were we able to buy him less than 8 months ago? Your whole argument is built on the premise that we can't buy our own top quality players, but Wharton is proof that we can... unless you're suggesting he drastically developed in 16 games?

Will the business minds on here only be happy when we are circling the Premier League plug hole once again? Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (13 Aug 2024 1.38pm) In reality, he doesn't. He has to go through the motions, turn up to training, play matches, but you can't force someone to apply themselves properly or play to their maximum. Alvarez is a good example - he had another 3 years contract at City, they were desperate to keep him, but he wanted out and they know in reality there is little value in forcing him to stay.

I think Parish, knows what he is doing. If he thinks he will not sell Guehi, just because that’s what poorer clubs do, as some suggest, then fine by me.

Indeed, what seems obvious by Parish's response is that 55 million with five million via add ons isn't going to cut it. We know that Chelsea will get a fair chunk out of a transfer so with two years left the price will be high.

And therein lies the problem with release clauses that don't reflect a player's value. Originally posted by Putitout

I hope I'm wrong but I doubt Mateta wants a new contract....as will be the case with all our wanted stars. This is the season to strike it hot. If we can replace those stars well and still retain Glasner....then we could see Palace become a genuinely bigger club. We have reason for optimism, though it's all about the players we bring in.

He was unproven when we bought him. It's like discovering a 20 goal a season striker, for a guaranteed replacement, you're looking at haaland, salah and kane.

I can't imagine Mateta is on massive wages at the moment so a big pay increase may tempt him to sign - he will likely want assurances that we won't stand in his way if a CL club comes calling, but I think we can convince him to sign a new deal and ensure ourselves a decent fee if his form continues. He's probably on half of what the likes of Eze are, so we have more room to negotiate at least.

Sure, and I'd obviously agree we're not in a position where we can buy established world-class players, but Guehi is not in that bracket either.

I personally think we should cash in, but we're in the driving seat, If Newcastle want him, pay the money, if it's city or Liverpool, I doubt he'd be as committed to us and would be pushing to force a move through. On a free, he could pick his club, with 1 year left on his contract, there will be far more interest in him. We know that, Newcastle know that, so make them pay what we want.
