Surrey stalwart and England top order batsman Graham Thorpe has sadly passed away aged 55. A classy left hander who faced some of the most destructive bowling attacks the modern test game has seen (Waqar/Wasim/Akhtar/Mushtaq; Lee/Warne; Ambrose/Walsh; Kumble; Murali; Donald/Pollock etc) averaging over 44 in Test cricket, playing in exactly 100 test matches. A personal memory I have is seeing the look on his face as him and Nasser knocked off the winning runs in Karachi. According to Wikipedia, "it was England's first Test victory against pakistan in pakistan since they toured in 1961–62." Hugely sad news. A county and national team batting legend and consummate coach thought so highly by past and present colleagues. World class for sure.

A really good batsman who played exceptionally well in a generally poor team.

Managed to avoid the cricketing accolades that he warranted. You always think of sportspeople living longer lives , due to their enhanced levels of fitness. 55, tragically short-lived.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Incredibly bad news. Was my favorite cricketer of his Era. A wonderfully talented batsman and shot maker. RIP

Like most depressive illnesses (including alcoholism), the person tends to hide it very well. Until it's too late.

Jeez, SSN has just reported he was killed by a train. RIP.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Gut wrenching and incredibly sad. I'm not the biggest cricket fan but Thorpe/Strauss were the headliners of my first real interest. RIP, condolences and best wishes for his family.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |
