Why doesn't comparing two protests make sense? If you want to compare two protests, compare the incident in Southport with the incident in Leeds. The latter involved the authorities trying to take some children into care; the former was in response to at least three children being knifed to death. The Southport response seems quite restrained compared with the Leeds one, yet nobody died in Leeds.
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

That doesn't answer my question - you just seem to be agreeing that you can in fact compare protests. I don't agree there was much restrained about yesterday.

I agree, and that's essentially what I'm getting at. Labour/Tory parties of Law and Order. Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime. Monty Python at their best.

I don't think it's a desirable outcome, but I also don't think it warrants a 5-year prison sentence. How many emergency services do you think were delayed last night? Reports of 50+ police officers suffering injuries, major damage to public property... there's no logic that says blocking traffic is worse than that, but I've no doubt the sentences won't come close. That's my point. My view is that the protests blocking motorways are effectively forcibly imprisoning thousands of motorists. A five year sentence seems lenient where people have been involved in previous protests and warned. An alternative would be for some form of class action against the individuals or the organisation involved. They will have no money to pay of course, but winding up orders against JSO etc. would be fun to watch.

And my view is that attacking the police, smashing the s*** out of a town and vandalising public and private property is a far worse offence, and that's without me inventing dramatic descriptions of what they're doing.

Perhaps the police should have stepped back like they did in Leeds initially. I didn't say I agreed with the Southport riot, I implied that I could understand why it happened due to the perceived inbalance that the authorities apply to different situations involving different segments of the community.

Some good news after a turbulent week.
Judge Shane Collery told the defendants as he handed down the sentences that their behaviour was 'disproportionate to your aims' - a fortnight after JSO co-founder Roger Hallam was given a five-year prison term. Mr Collery said it was 'easy to be blase when it's not your life that's disrupted', as he gave two-year sentences to George Simonson, 24, of Leeds, and 26-year-old Theresa Higginson of Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. The judge told Delap: ‘Age, I regret, has not brought wisdom.’ ECHR likely to get an appeal lodged with them on the jailing of peaceful political protesters and therefore I expect them to get released (probably with compensation for unlawful arrest/imprisonment). So, what does Sir Kneel Starmer do: withdraw the UK from the ECHR or accept that various protest groups will be queuing up on the hard shoulder to make their peaceful protest? He is going to be pushed into a corner if that happens but he can always blame far right thugs as the root cause of all the UK’s problems.
