Relived that he has now gone. He should have gone after the last World Cup, and I worried that he would stay on again. The FA (and I have little confidence in them) need to get it absolutely right in the next appointment and sadly it looks like it could well be Graham Potter (I don't think Eddie Howe will leave Newcastle). He has left us with legacy of missed opportunities. A winnable World Cup semi final All 3 of those games is where we have the least possession in an international game. We still can't beat top teams when it really matters. Not forgetting we were relegated from the Nations League and now won't be seeded for World Cup qualification. He has had opportunities that no England manager (bar Alf Ramsey) has had, but failed to take any of them. The one thing he has done though is being through young players quickly, though still picked a misfiring Harry Kane when again it really mattered. He will be admired by some for taking us to 2 finals, but for me he is still a very average manager.

It's sad in that he seems like a nice bloke. He was described in the build-up on Sunday as "intellectual and intelligent". With respect he's definitely the latter but definitely not the former (although I suspect it comes down to the reporter not actually understanding the meaning of the word). The big sadness for GS is that he will be remembered by most fans as someone who wasn't quite good enough.

I think Southgate will actually be remembered fondly by many, especially if we return to the dark ages that preceded his appointment. The days of semis and finals will be recalled like fairy-tales if that happens. I'd suggest it is what it is. There's a lot of truth in what you've stated but I'd argue equally as I have stated above. He has failed to deliver the end goal, to cross the proverbial finish line, so there will be some regret and of course critique of that, but he must also take credit for getting us there in the first instance, especially where so many have failed so abjectly. He has taken or at least overseen England stepping up a level but the yearning is now for the ultimate prize which he has not delivered. Southgate must either be hailed as part of the process when this is achieved or vindicated when we go backwards.
