Because, they want to keep the player on their terms. Barcelona have put a billion euro buyout clause in Yamals contract ( the kid, that scored Spain’s wonder goal ). Nobody is going to trigger it, but Barcelona have the player for the length of his contract.

Yes but buy outs are compulsory in Spain and Barcelona are big enough to set them where they like. If there's no clause can't the club just refuse a transfer offer?

Of course they can. In a free market, which Spain clearly isn't, there is no justification whatsoever for a club to insist on a buyout clause.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

If I was in the players position I would definitely have a release clause. Likes of Zaha never had one and could have gone when arsenal came in with a 50 million bid. He resented us ever since imo.

It's a smart thing to do when a player inserts a release clause and im sure we will see more of them.

Or he could have let his contract run down and not accept a pay rise every 18 months for a three year extension.

In answer to the OP's question - yes they are if you're getting a player like Olise.

We lifelong fans will support our team whatever BUT it's magic when we're entertained in the process by rare talents like Michael. We took full advantage of the release clause in his Reading contract and I didn't hear anyone complaining about us getting him so cheaply. Whilst his injuries deprived us of seeing him more, what we have seen from him got us off our seats on so many occasions.

For clubs at our level in the PL (or clubs lower down the football pyramid for that matter) release clauses are inevitable where there's a player who has the talent. Do you think Reading would have agreed to a release clause if they didn't think Olise was a rare talent?

as mentioned we got olise by paying his release clause, bayern did it to us, much rather we get the release clause money rather then have a player sulking and then going for next to nothing a few years later.

Sometimes I set out for Ludlow
Sometimes I end up in Chepstow

Olise's agent was quite switched on and got a release clause inserted at Reading, when he had barely kicked a ball so it was pretty obvious he would do the same at Palace.

The contract renewal last year was clearly controlled by the agent and although the release clause was increased it was still set at a reasonable level. The fact that both the previous and this release clause were pretty well known indicates the agent was touting his player around to clubs.

Other than Olise i think it is only Eze who has one and this seems to be on the back of Olise's renewal.

I'm not sure they make too much difference to be honest. If a player wants to go there is not a lot a club can do about it. If you keep an unhappy player his performances will deteriorate and it will affect the whole squad (see Zaha for the season after the Arsenal move fell through).

Look at the Marc Guehi situation. Signed a 5 year contract and has been a model professional for 3 seasons. He appears less keen on extending so with 2 years left Palace are left with a dilemma. Do we cash in now or let the contract and his value run down. No release clause in sight.

My remebrance is he did have one the season before but the club bought it out with a massive pay rise. He claimed at the time of the Arsenal bid that SP had agentleman's agreement with him he would be sold if suitable offer came in. Arsenals was not suitable as we were not willing for staged payments and wanted higher figure on staged payments.

A lot of players will have release clauses but we probably hear nothing about them until a club wants to purchase. There is also of course lots of situations where players are sold below release clause.

Olise in some ways was a special case He had the release clause which Chelsea tried to trigger but we claim that they broke rules in doing so. They backed off , cancelled loan of young left back who went to Newcastle and Olise signed a new contract giving him more money and us higher release clause. I think he would have stayed another season but Bayern's offer was too good for him so he decided to go and good luck to him.

Reports on Eze and Geuhi leaving are all over clickbate and the former may have a release clause (or possibly an agreement that above a certain figure he can talk to other clubs). It is all conjecture but neither will move unless they are guaranteed first team football. The clubs that are reported to be interested already have players in their position who they are unlikely to drop so will either be interested? Will both be better signing a new contract with a release clause set around £80 million which comes into operation at end of next season (possibly wit a stipulation it is voided if we get into Europe)

A club the size of Palace will always will be at a disadvantage with transfer dealings and it comes down to compromising over getting the better player or potentially better players.

What doesn’t help us is the FFP rules which is a shambles and gives certain clubs license to take the piss out of the whole situation. What needs to be done is a cap on players salaries and the FFP rules implemented in the right way.

My view on the matter “ are the release clauses worth the pain” is yes they are, but certain areas need to be tweaked…

Talking of release clause's, this has surfaced & the 4th sentence/paragraph is literally word for word when they were talking about Olise, it's about Eze . . . [Link]

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Apparently release clauses aren't very common. But we had two players with one.
