Watching Wharton on the bench and the team celebrating Watkins goal, he looks as if he doesnt want to be there. He isnt going to get any minutes on the pitch, unless Rice gets injured.

Southgate is about as good a man manager as any coach. Wharton will know that he is effectively the academy player who sit on our bench but have little real chance of getting on the pitch. He is the future.

That said, I would also be perplexed (other words available) by Mainoo getting the nod over him.

If you’re right, he might change his mind when/if he gets a nice shiny winners medal

Really!? Even after the last couple of performances?

Don’t get me wrong, Wharton is a world class prospect, but so is Mainoo - I think it’s pretty much impossible to criticise his selection given how he’s played and how he’s improved the team.

I can see Mainoo and Wharton playing together really well. Wharton will take over from Rice sometime in the future. In my view he offers more now, but I am biased.

I don’t want Southgate as manager after this into the World Cup 2026. Not long ago we were 30 seconds from going out vs Slovakia in yet again the easiest draw possible. It was a bicycle kick that saved him and us. He got it right vs Holland, although we did get some luck with the penalty. And for most of the 2nd half they were keeping us out while pressuring with corners and free kicks. And what was his plan for the tournament? No leftback and Maguire at centre back. It’s only maguire’s injury that’s made the centre of defence stronger. I would offer Southgate an advisory role to the manager however. Advice on tournament preparation etc.

The problem is who do we offer it to?

Graham Potter? Not so much for his achievements as that he seems "an FA sort of guy".

To get us to another final and be in with a chance of winning it, I’d imagine.

Every team has moments of luck, particularly in knockout football where games are decided on such small margins. Margins like bringing on two subs who combine to score a last minute winner.

He is now by a considerable distance our most successful tournament manager - he is consistently and regularly taking us to the latter stages of tournaments; I find it very hard to agree that this is happening without him having a plan or, as others often suggest, any idea what he’s doing as a manager.
