Yes, they are.

Because Olise had a £60m release clause inserted when he signed a new contract last summer.

I'm disappointed in his leaving now after the way last season finished. I thought he could have given Palace another year. Especially when you consider the amount of games he missed.

The only consolation is he's not going to Chelsea.

I've heard clickbait that the release clause is not simple. Perhaps the amount varies depending on the club e.g. if a Top CL European club comes in it's £50m if it's Moan United £60m and if it's Chelsea £100m

Okay the last bit is a joke but it's a valid point. Palace would not want him to go to West Ham for example but Bayern or Real Madrid is another matter.

It is £50m then that’s below market value IMO.

SSN are reporting that fee is £50.7m and we may have to part with £5m of that to Reading according to reports.

Agreed! But what can we do. We signed the contract with that buy out clause in it.

I'm just hoping that the ease and smoothness in with which we handled the deal scores some brownie points with Bayern if we want any of their squad players in future (like Richards was).

The club have no say in the transfer fee, its all in Olises contract. He can now go to whatever club he wants without being out priced. Bayern will be in the same position, when Real Madrid decide they want him.
No other player has a release fee, so we can ask what we want for them.

Accepting that if Olise hadn't had a release clause at Reading we might not have signed him in the first place they do make contracts even more difficult. If a player won't sign without one we have no option and presumably they have to be set at a viable level for the club involved - Barcelona have a 17 year old with one worth €1bn which is alright for them.

It's not so much bitterness, but it does lead to cynicism.
The next time a high profile player signs a 5 year contract and gives a press conference about being delighted to be committed to the club and having the long term future settled, fans will be entitled to query the sincerity of the whole process.
The contractual equivalent of kissing the badge at whichever club thry happen to play for.

It’s literally nothing new though. I’ve been a palace fan for over 30 years so unfortunately I’ve become immune to this sort of thing. I think most people understood that he would leave this summer and the ‘5 year deal’ was a way of the club getting a bit more money for him and for him to get over his injury and continue his development.
It’s s*** but it’s football and it has made me cynical.
It could have been way way worse. He could have turned down the new deal and gone for £35 this summer.

Players come and they go, the only loyalty is from the fans, Kamada is a good player and I suspect Franca will turn out good, if there’s no more release clauses no need to sell, IMO I would accept an 80m+ offer for Guehi, and reinvest in some championship talent

Yea the come and go , a bit like a night out in Amsterdam. I'd be more worried about Glasner leaving he was only signed up on a 2 year contract , players can be replaced but a manager like that we cant do without .

We do have an option - don't sign them if they demand a release clause.

It's almost as if the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

It's about the executives taking control of the clubs they manage as opposed to the players controlling the clubs.
If all clubs agreed to not insert these clauses then they would soon disappear (a utopian world I know).

I know the argument goes if it suits all parties what's the problem.
Well I don't believe it suits our fans and I'm not sure the absence of Olise suits the club either.
