I'm not sure how my post could be interpreted as having an issue with people commenting on the football - that seems a strange suggestion.

Yes, it certainly wasn't a perfect performance, but tournament openers rarely are for many of the reasons you mention.

I think the extensions from accepting it as a sticky 90 minutes to 'everything this team has done in the last 10 years is overrated' are where things get silly.

So you've appointed yourself chief critic of the extent to which people can comment on England EDN?

I'm not having a go here, I'd just suggest tournament football is emotionally provocative for people and I'd equally suggest it does you no favours to be wound up by anybody else's hysterics, leave 'em to have at it if they wish! Just a suggestion.

More importantly, Come on England!! We can do nothing but support and 4 of our fellas (for now) are out there. Onwards and upwards... hopefully.

As an aside, is a 'Euro 2024' thread, dark horses in Romania for anybody?

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

In some tournaments we have had poor squads so expectations have been low (on my part), but recently I think our squads have been good.

Southgate has been dealt a good hand but I fear he will blow it with poor tactics and team selection. It's the frustration that knowing we could be a lot better with a different manager that is annoying me.

I don’t get your point at all - I haven’t said anyone is not allowed to comment on football or anything close to that.

Much like after a Palace game, you will get some harsh critics and you will get some people disagreeing with said criticism - I’m not sure how this is any different.

But anyway, long way to go! Interested to see how France get on tonight - a distinct lack of upsets so far, surely we see at least one first round scalp.

We're running down a dead end here. Let's just say I'm not a fan of sarcasm but if I were genuinely true to that word I wouldn't employ it myself, albeit I did so light-heartedly.

I'd just rather read people's opinion on Romania for now though? Genuinely, it has passed me by that they may be a decent outfit. Undefeated in qualifying, won 6 and drew 4!

Second half so disappointing and dispiriting.

We played as Hodgson would have - retreating to let moderate opposition look good.

Southgate reacts (sometimes) but is never pro-active. Compare with what Glasner would have done.

Basically he's gifted with some special players but hasn't much clue how to use them. He'll have Kane taking corners next.

My paper (Times) raving about Rice and Guehi - really?

Yes, I did predict a shambles, and it was, more shots, more possession, England were lucky to win, Bellingham, is fantastic and we have a chance with him, Kane is yesterdays man and Foden is massively overrated, time will tell

I am a bit surprised by the negative comments about the Serbia game and England's prospects in general. Serbia were always going to present a decent test. We were the better team in the first half took the lead and although Serbia battle valiantly they in my opinion never looked really looked like scoring. With the Slovenia Denmark game ending in a draw i would be surprised if one more win and a draw will not see us through as group winners. Ideally it would be good to get the win against Denmark and we can then rotate players like Bellingham for the Slovenia game and keep them fresh for the knockout stages.
I was impressed by Rice and he protected the back four well and stood up well to Serbia's physical game. He is very consistent and is a player than can play in every game and still play well. I can see there is a case to play Ollie Watkins as he works harder off the ball than Kane and to play someone like Gordon over Foden but these are great options to have and reflect England's competition in the forward areas. I suspect though the only change will be Gallagher for TAA.
These tournaments are about peaking at the right time and improving as you go along.

He most certainly is not. He was the best player in the premier league this season, bar none (Palmer came close). One of probably three of four England players who can genuinely be considered world class.

Just because Southgate doesn't know how to get the best of him (playing him wide was never going to work)...doesn't mean he's overrated. The guy is top, top draw.

35 appearances, 4 goals and 8 assists would suggest otherwise

Saka 35, 11, 7 Bellingham is number 10, so where do you play Foden if you don’t want him wide?

My issue with the game, and probably perceived overaction to a 1-0 win. Is that its more than just this one game.

Its off the back of a terrible performance against Iceland, unconvincing again Bosnia, last min equaliser against Belgium, loss to Brazil, draw against Macedonia.

So we are all hoping that we manage to pull things together for the tournament, but its the same dross. And for a Palace fan, it feels very similar to the end of Roy, no cohesiveness, no apparent plan, players in wrong positions etc.

And last 10 years.... I honestly do believe that England should have done better. Southgate's tactics (as with Roys) are able to drag us through matches against poorer oppo, but struggle against the better ones.

Especially considering the Spanish, Germans and Italians have had pretty big squad overhauls.

And this Trent in midfield experiment, its as bad as Scholes playing Left mid, or Kane on corners.

Also, the friendlies are pointless. He doesn't use them to try new formations or tactics, simply putting different people into the same roles. Its why we are now entering a major tournament without knowing:
Who to play in CM
How to get the best out of Foden
What our plan B is
If Watkins, and Toney could play 'with' Kane

The first 20-or-so minutes were the most intense and assured football I've seen from England in a long time. While it's unrealistic to be able to sustain that for 90mins and there will always be spells of pressure to soak up, all of the fans and pundits can't be wrong in that Southgate lacked bravery in the subs. Gallagher and Bowen are good players, but they're not the sort to want to receive and hold the ball in tight spaces under pressure (Also Wharton much more likely to play forward passes than Mainoo). Would have swapped Foden and possibly Bellingham for Palmer and Eze type players who can carry and/or pass the ball up the pitch and thus exert the pressure on the opposition. I think Southgate just views the game differently. The game is never safe at 1-0 as we've found out time and time again. As Fabregas said in the post-match analysis, shoring things up is one way to secure a lead, but there is an opposite to that which can also works and that's what we're missing to really make us a world beating team
