Cromwell was an Englishman, a regicide, and a war criminal. Had the crimes of Cromwell never happened, i reckon the subsequent 400 years in Ireland would have more peaceful. And the Protestant Reformation would probably have taken hold peacefully there. Who is English ? Cromwell is probably best forgotten.

Ethnicity is determined by shared beliefs and culture. Which can and do evolve with time and can add newcomers and shed others. That’s precisely what happened with our Royal Family. Their choice, just as it is ours. No one would attempt to tell them they were only 3/4 Scot because they had a French grandmother if they were wearing a kilt, carrying a claymore and reciting Burns. It’s cultural.

This place is a mixing pot and always has been. The fact that previously it was 'white people ' in that pot disguised that fact. Colour has now been added to the mix. But so what. Eze and Guehi are currently in Germany playing for England. Anyone going to say they are not English? I'm a mix of Scottish, French, German and English. But consider myself as English, British and as patriotic as the next man. Spot on! The claims about DNA being a determinant of identity is reminiscent of a time we would all prefer to forget, but mustn’t. They are a fig leaf for the xenophobia of those waving the St George’s Cross, chanting racist slogans whilst worshiping football hooligans and pretending to be patriotic. I am glad it is being called out. They mustn’t be allowed to obscure and confuse the very real challenges we face. Challenges for which they have no answers but to throw more problems into the mix.
