I must admit that I have never really followed Russiagate that closely other than to tease a certain poster about when Trump will be prosecuted "any day now any day".

Anyway I hadn't realised that this all started with Hilary.

Anyway although this was a politically motivated dossier and key people lied, well apparently they are not guilty of lying.

One more point

Politically motivated? Probably and obviously not good if true.

Key testimony untrue? Also bad and those who lied should be punished for contempt. However, it depends on whether their system applies the "fruits of the poison tree" principle which is important in US jurisprudence. One piece of evidence taints the whole case. In this country we do not apply that sweeping clearance of a whole case because one bit (or some bits) of evidence was fabricated. The corrupted stuff is severed from the admissible evidence and the case rests on what is left. Thus...

The case is proven based on non-tainted evidence as more likely than not to have occurred. Bang to rights regardless of the above.

(I should stress that is not my view as I have no clue if the allegations in the US (or, indeed, here for Brexit) are true.)

It can also be seen as an investigation by responsible politicians, initially the Republican "never Trumpers" and later the Democrats, into credible rumours, which was handed to the FBI, who were conducting their own investigation. The material it contained corroborated the FBI's own findings.

The appointment of special counsel John Durham to investigate this was made at the behest of Trump in 2019, as a way to deflect attention from him, and to try to discredit it. That was truly a political act!

Durham has turned up nothing at all of any consequence. Some minor irregularities. This was the last prosecution to fail, but not the first. It resulted in the D o J distancing itself from some of it's own witnesses!

The conclusion has to be that the Steele dossier has been shown to be reliable and it's use by Mueller justified.

Whether Trump ever gets skewered by any of it's contents remains unknown. Sticking skewers into an eel as slippery as Trump tends to be difficult.

Nevertheless old eels tend to stink more than younger, more attractive ones, so start to become less appealing.
