Joel Ward is the perfect squad player, does everything without fuss and gives his all. He has most probably been one of the best signings we have made value wise and performance wise.

Not only that but he is a genuine nice bloke, I think him and Jules must be cut from the same cloth...

Yes, agree 100%.

Both devout Christians...coincidence?

He was absolutely superb today and gets far too much criticism. He’s a proven, established PL defender. He is nowhere near AWB at one on one tackling but streets ahead in his overall defensive duties. Happy for him today.

Yes Wardy was great today,if he can keep up that kind of performance Wan-Bissaka won't be missed.

That's the best I have seen Ward play, good positional sense and looked comfortable on the ball.

Often gets beaten 1v1 against faster players but never shirks and is covers the far post on crosses from the opposition’s right hand side really well.

Agree totally. He was solid and the times he marshalled the ball out using his strength was something Wan Bissaka would have struggled with.

He has always been solid for us, how anyone can say otherwise is nuts.

People constantly moaning that we needed a new right back need their heads testing. Joel Ward always puts his body on the line and covers his centre halves well. We will be fine with him as RB all season.

Agreed but what if he gets injured? Kelly is a centre half for me even though he started his career at right back

The reality is though, we are weaker this season at right-back than last even though Ward had a fairly good game today. I like Ward but 1-on-1 he still looks suseptable, with Bernard getting the better of him a couple of times in the first half. The other point is that he is our only proper right-back and PvA is our only proper left-back.

One on one he will get turned inside out plenty this season. A perfectly decent player but we really needed another right back, and I've been saying for some time another left back too. PVA needs either replacing or a competent alternative to keep him on his toes, because he's often a liability.
