She has her problems, but is OUR friend. Think of no buffer/punch bag between Western Europe and the Middle East. That's frightening.

Don't get too misty eyed about the turks , they invaded Cyprus with the Russians egging them on. they are strategically placed for Putin in what is a NATO battlefront.

The Russians? Is that the latest theory? For years I thought the American's were considered responsible. Never mind that there was a coup headed by a mentally deranged man who edited a newspaper and boasted about how many Turk's he'd killed in the 60s.

With the Colonels in Athens egging on the Greek Cypriots to implement Enosis (Greek and Cypriot 'unification'). The Turks may have over-reacted but had cause to do so.

I agree to a certain extent but it's beside the point, incidentally we and the yanks didn't help that particular situation. Edited by danincyp (16 Jul 2016 5.21pm)

Edited by danincyp (16 Jul 2016 5.21pm) As I implied there are serious question marks over Erdogan and where he wants to take Turkey, but for our safety best keep them in the Western orbit. Anyway, Turkey have no particular love for Russia, historically or now. And they're probably only welcome in TRNC because of all the 'dirty money' they fritter away in the casinos.

Anyone supporting the coup calling themselves democrates would really be hypocrites. This exactly. People talk democracy all the time on this site and then support a military coup that is totally unsupported by Govenment, opposition and the people alike. That's why the coup failed, absolutely no support for it. Believing in democracy but only if the view one supports prevails, is not democracy. Many dead, more than a thousand civilians injured, thousands of arrests. It's always easy for people in other countries to talk about a coup elsewhere when they sit here watching X Factor and all it has done is strengthen Erdogan. He can now say that he is the one that stood up for democracy, even while closing down opposition disent. If the Turks want Imans, hippies, neo cons, socialists or telly tubbies to run their country and they vote for it, then good luck to them. They have the same right to determine their own future, through the ballot, as we do here. It's served us well in terms of stability, even though I don't always agree with our politicians. I still enjoy the benefits of a generally peaceful society and I respect the vote, even if I choose not to exercise that right, all the time.. I would rather see a Democratic theocracy, than a military dictatorship, if that's what the people want and vote for it.

Confused about last night? In one sentence here it is... 'soldiers attempting to overthrow a democratically elected government that is undemocratic in its abuse of power in order to restore democracy.'

Very good Have to remember though, in regard to respecting democracy, that the National Socialists swept into power fairly in 1933 in Germany with enough of a free vote too. Second referendum please.
