As I've said, I think it's high time private schools charity status was put under the microscope and charging VAT is something that probably should have come in decades ago.

It will not create transformational sums of money, that's for sure. But I doubt this will force a significant majority of private schools to close. It will certainly impact some, though.

Some costs can be absorbed due to the ability to claim back expenses elsewhere. It will get competitive and I'll be surprised if the govt don't include a couple of taxback related sweeteners as part of the change.

Sorry to be a bit thick on this topic but when we talk about private schools are we referring to the likes of Eton etc. or does the potential VAT charging also apply to private religious orientated schools. Will they get an exemption?

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.

I am in agreement with this however it should be part of a wider review. There are far too many organizations which are abusing the charitable system, we need a complete review and a tightening of the rules.

'Your idea' – Actual definition, the shoe fits, it's not too broad. Private education in this country is not a necessity. It is a luxury.

Taxing education... it's adding VAT onto a service provided by profitable, private businesses (not charities) that should have been added decades ago.

So dramatic

Education is not a gold watch or a hot tub.

People are paying for the quality of education. Luxury is the wrong definition.

What ever you call it, taxing education is retrograde. It is anti productive, anti wealth, anti aspirational, anti achievement.

It is typical Labour.

Next they will after your pensions and inheritance. All the things that people work for.

Vote Reform.

It applies to many schools that offer special needs education in areas where it is not available, this may force parents to move to get the SEN services their children need, who could support this or is it acceptable level of collateral damage.

The more famous public schools like Eton and Harrow are the exception and will not lose any students as the parents are wealthy and often not in the UK.

Could you name say twenty private primary or secondary schools?

The left is obsessed with education being a class struggle and always wheel out Eton and Harrow.

Remember Baroness Clean slate who gave Corbyn's Labour a big tick in the anti semitism box in return for a peerage, She then got all bitter cos Eton wouldn't take her son and he had to slum it at Dulwich College.

Arguably that level of education, experience, exposure and so on is significantly more valuable than both those examples. It's certainly way more expensive than a gold watch.

It it not an essential, or a need.

Luxury is not the wrong definition, by definition.

Any fee paying school, I believe.

Something like 2600 of them in the UK.

Already any pension that's above the basic rate tax threshold, including the State Retirement Pension, gets taxed.....it's just not deducted from the pension payment itself, but comes as an adjustment to your Tax Code so is taken from any other pension/income or billed at the end of each Tax Year.

You can call it what you like.

I don't consider owning a house a luxury, or a car, or a TV. All these things are 'private'.
I could get all this stuff for free or for a much smaller cost, but they would be crap.

Because I earned the money and bought them, does that make them luxuries?

I think not.

I have to pay more for my dentistry now because I'm chucked off the NHS list.
Is that luxury, or shall I let my teeth fall out?

I have private health care. Shall I use it for an operation one day or die because of NHS waiting times?

Is that a luxury?

Ah ok, so it would be possibly the rate and the point of payment
