i see Goebbels' secretary died very recently

She denied knowing anything of the Holocaust.

So presumably when Goebbels asked her to dictate several letters to Adolf Hitler, "Herr Hitler, most of the concentration camps are operating near full capacity.....", it must have slipped her mind.

Well by full capacity, they were at dawn, but generally by nightfall, they'd freed up some space.

Of course she might not have known 'known', but its a safe bet that most Germans weren't oblivious to the treatment of the Jewish by the Nazi regime. They may not have known of the death camps, but they certainly were aware of the ghettos and concentration camps, and the violence inherent in the regimes treatment of the Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals etc.

"Knowing" about something and seeing it first hand is a very different experience. I wonder how loyal Germans would have reacted if they had seen the camps for themselves.
I am also sure that the average German, even in the military, would have been powerless to do anything, even if they did object to the camps on moral grounds.

They had ways of making you take dictation (in every sense of the word).

A fair few of the neighbours complained to the authorities that the stench of corpses and burning bodies caught in the wind was ruining their breakfast bratwurst and perusal of their morning Der Sturmer.

They knew of the death camps.

I post this as the son of a Holocaust survivor who emigrated from Nuremberg to London courtesy of the owners of Marks & Spencer before moving on to the US. I have wondered when Holocaust Remembrance Day was put in January rather than the Spring, which is when Yom Ha-Shoa has been for many years. Setting it to the day Auschwitz was captured didn't end the Nazi Holocaust as most of its inmates were forced out to camps within Germany, many to Belsen which the British Army liberated in April. The disastrous conditions there nearly overwhelmed the liberators and many died after liberation. Just as the Americans discovered at places like Buchenwald and Dachau, feeding starving people ended up killing them, especially those with typhus, cholera and dysentery.

From 2001,but no less pertinent for that, and perhaps all the more relevant during our current new dawn of 'desensitisation':

'The mass of ordinary Germans did know about the evolving terror of Hitler's Holocaust, according to a new research study. They knew concentration camps were full of Jewish people who were stigmatised as sub-human and race-defilers. They knew that these, like other groups and minorities, were being killed out of hand.
They knew that Adolf Hitler had repeatedly forecast the extermination of every Jew on German soil. They knew these details because they had read about them. They knew because the camps and the measures which led up to them had been prominently and proudly reported step by step in thousands of officially-inspired German media articles and posters according to the study, which is due to be published simultaneously in Britain and the US early next month and which was described as ground-breaking by Oxford University Press yesterday and already hailed by other historians.

The reports, in newspapers and magazines all over the country were phases in a public process of "desensitisation" which worked all too well, culminating in the killing of 6m Jews, says Robert Gellately. His book, Backing Hitler, is based on the first systematic analysis by a historian of surviving German newspaper and magazine archives since 1933, the year Hitler became chancellor. The survey took hundreds of hours and yielded dozens of folders of photocopies, many of them from the 24 main newspapers and magazines of the period.'

If this is true, what could objectors have done about it in war time when they were ruled by a ruthless militarised dictatorship who were effectively protecting them from the enemy.

It's all so easy to judge after the event but people have their own lives and the lives of their loved ones to protect. What would you have done about it?

You forget the 6-7 year period before war commenced which was the precursor...the 'desenstisation' of the citizenry ,and stripping of employment and civic rights accompanied by random violence

What would I have done? Killed as many of the scum as possible on my involuntary way to the ovens...

There was a German resistance and many brave people gave their lives with acts of defiance and sheltering people..

Bravo.

Well we never know what we are capable of until it actually comes to it. I'm always fascinated by people who want to sacrifice their lives for complete strangers.
It's easy to say you would give your life of course but the reality can be a little tougher.
And what about your wife and kids? I hope they were willing to give their lives as well in this hypothetical past.

You really are too silly sometimes..I am Jewish...your 'complete strangers' are my fellow oppressed

May the force protect the human race from too many more people with your outlook on life being around nowadays when people are demonised, stripped of literally everything and operated on for experimental reasons, butchered on a massive industrial scale (with body parts stripped for personal gain/industrial use) through no fault of their own ...

I'm not a mind reader Legal.

Well now your attitudes to various topics become clearer.

If I was Jewish and my family had perished at the hands of the Nazis then I doubt that I could remain neutral or unemotional about the Holocaust or Neo Nazi groups and the like.
Equally, and I say this with the benefit of not being in that position, I don't think I would want to become a victim of it either post event.
My grandfather fought in the war against the Germans in Europe and I am always irrationally proud of that. I have his medals on my lounge wall but I can't spend my life hating Germans because some German Bullets whistled past him in action. I can't really relate to your mindset as a Jewish person beyond feeling disgusted by the dreadful treatment of fellow human beings.
