I don't really understand why he has gone from being such a fan favourite to being so underappreciated in the last year or 2. In my mind he is very similar to Jedinak, just a lot better on the ball. Admittedly nearly cost us a goal vs Everton the other night, but on the whole I think he (like PVA) is wrongly used as a scapegoat when things do not go well. You can just tell he cares as well, I think a lot more than some others.

He was definitely better in a 3 man midfield as he gets caught out for pace when he is pushed forward in a 2 man midfield but I agree with you he gets hammered for no good reason most of the time.

Personally I'd say his performance level has, for over a year now, been miles off what it was a couple of years ago when he was often referred to by pundits as one of the best players outside the big clubs. He looks slow, uses the ball badly, clocks up stupid bookings every other week, and seems unfit. Add to that his s***, selfish behaviour during lock down, compounded by the wholly inadequate response from the club which felt like him getting away with it, and it's no wonder he's getting a bit of grief.

Yeah I'm not sure what you're not seeing? He's had higher peaks than Jedinak but currently lower lows and a more noticeable drop-off. The warrior that would 'murder ya' whilst also having excellent vision and through-balls making him the thinking mans Jedinak has long gone and been replaced by a sluggish, tired husk that can't pass for toffee. Jedinak never could pass, so he never got such a hard time from fans this is true. But he never lost his aggression and leadership during his time here so is remembered fondly. For me, Luka has gone from first name on the Team Sheet to liability and certainly not Captain material. When you have a Legend like Gary Cahill throwing his body in front of everything and organising his Team-Mates its laughable to me that skulky Luka who runs a mile away from the Ref if Zaha gets taken out or the Opposition gets given an unfair penalty is our Captain. He is infuriating ! 1. His passing lacks any vision or common sense and often to someone already closely marked. I rest my case, so, what are his good points ?

To be honest Jack, I'm with BTP on this one. Luka does get a fair amount of criticism, but he's definitely not the player he was. He's nearly cost us a lot more goals than the one he came close to giving away against Everton. His passing is erratic, he just isn't fast enough any more and he makes too many clumsy tackles that frequently result in bookings. His time with the club has been well served, but, as with all athletes, we have to accept that they can't sustain peak performance for ever. I know it's sacrilegious to say this, but Wilf today isn't the Wilf of yesterday either. He's passed his peak too. But I don't want to see him go......yet.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

He has been a shadow of his former self for some time now. He was particular atrocious the other night at Everton. Everyone entitled to their opinion of course but you cant defend his performances. Dear old Roy will still continue to pick him though! Edited by eagleheath (08 Apr 2021 3.23pm) Edited by eagleheath (08 Apr 2021 3.23pm)

He is slow and his pass percentage is poor for a central midfielder. Have we anyone better to play there at the moment. No.

I, too, am with the current majority on this thread in believing Luka is no longer the player we first bought. He's slow and lacks the vision required for a player in his role. If his Everton faux pas was an occasional error, it wouldn't be so bad, but it's not. You only have to go back to the Spurs game to see who lost the ball in a dangerous position that led to them scoring. Having said that, I do accept that some of his better work of breaking up the oppo's play often goes under the radar And I imagine he's won a few brownie points for that cross in that match against the Weed! However, on balance, he's no longer our first choice CDM for me.

so, what are his good points ? He does still take a decent penalty. Rather him than Tekkers any day. That's no reason to hang on to him though.

I do not think he has been the same player since Cabaye left, bring in a mobile midfielder who will take the ball from Luka and carry it up field.... bingo Luca will look so much better.
