Never tried starting a topic before:

Best and worst away fans you have encountered on the train to Selhurst and why?

Best: Sunderland always seemed pretty easy going - wanting a party in london after the game. QPR always seemd decent as well.

Worst: Southampton / Chelsea plastic casuals or Everton trying to kick off with everyone on the train and then in Thornton Heath High street (but it was only a dozen of them).

Over to you - Its going to be pretty subjective I guess.

4 playoff finals, Claridge, Hopkin, Shipperley, Phillips....

Life's never dull!

OK, I'll respond first as you picked up on my first post.

Not sure about this in reality because I don't remember ever travelling to a match on the train.

But it's train related. I took my Dad to a match at Brighton's old Goldstone ground and their fans were chanting 'You'll never reach the station'. Poor old Dad was petrified and I've never forgiven them.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Was on a packed train with a lot of West Brom fans after a game a few years ago (just after Pards got appointed for them) and they seemed like a friendly bunch.

Worst is Man United, purely for the fact droves of them were on the tube leaving Wembley post FA cup final before I even made it on, and none seemed bothered or happy about beating us and winning the damn thing. Plastic cretins!!

Good Question.

Worst.

Manchester United. Bunch of ignorant loudmouth fat old men. Always look grubby. No charm, charisma or decent banter. Probably never kicked a ball. Swallow up any bollocks the Manchester United marketing department send out, quote it unquestionably with no ability for independent thought. Overinflated self importance based on reflected glory from the past despite winning no titles since 2013.

Everton deserve a noticeable mention. Bumped into Brighton fans on a few occasions, they all seem to have small man syndrome - never anything interesting to say, just the same tired old cliches (you'd think with the amount they moan about how they get the same old unoriginal abuse that they might not use strerotypes against other clubs)

Best.

I had a nice chat with some Man City games a while back. Southampton/Portsmouth/Bournemouth/Arsenal fans often used to be on the same train home as me, normally in small groups and were mostly decent to talk to.

I don't like Southampton fans just because the only two times I have had any personal experience of bovver was in matches involving Southampton.

I don't usually make a point of mixing with away fans, but, living on the south coast line does mean that an A23 derby game involves travelling up with Brighton fans. The last time we played them with a crowd at Selhurst at the end of 2019 me and a couple of mates shared a compartment with weed fans and had a very amiable chat with some friendly joshing.

On arrival at East Croydon I found myself crossing the bridge surrounded a by a hoard of very noisy young Albion fans chanting and singing. However, they ignored me and my Palace scarf - perhaps because I am in an older age range: I don't know.

Of course there are good and rotten apples in every barrel and it is largely pure chance as to which type you find yourself in the company of.

I've travelled by bus and by car (and on one occasion in my youth by hitch-hiking), but I think I've travelled to a match by train only once in my life (and I started supporting in 1954).

That was away to Watford many years ago, and on the train back one extremely loud-mouthed and foul-mouthed Palace supporter "entertained" the whole carriage all the way to London. All football fans are used to bad language, but half an hour of swearing, blasphemy and filthy language (much of it with reference to Craig Harrison, I recall) I frankly found upsetting. What fathers with children could have felt I shudder to think.

So probably not an answer you were expecting, Eric, particularly as you were obviously asking about other teams' fans, but from my sample of one that's the worst away supporter I've seen on a train.

Best?
Baggies fans tend to be fun to share football chat with on the train (I live in the W Midlands so get to travel with them occasionally). Also shared a pint or two with a good bunch of Sheff U fans in the Railway, Thornton Heath last year (before the game, I hasten to add).

Worst?
Wolves fans I've come across on the train have been obnoxious.

Back in the eighties I had lots of encounters with them on trains, buses and just generally walking around, all wanting to fight all getting stuck in, even in our ground when I was in the lower Whitehorse end with the away fans above us they were the worst of the lot as I remember.

Sorry to say one of the worst incidents I’ve had the misfortune to witness also sadly involved Palace fans. Back in the bad old days of the late 1970’s me and a mate were on a train returning from Swindon. The carriage was packed, we had to stand as did a lot of people. Two black ladies were minding their own business, some foul mouthed pi55ed fans started giving the ladies racist abuse and manhandling them. When the train stopped at the next station these two ladies were shoved off the train. Even too this day I cringe when I remember this incident.

Worst by far Manure - I still remember being pushed and kicked by them after the semi-final replay at Villa Park in 1995, and being called a racist because of the Eric Cantona incident.
Best in recent memory: joshing with some Newcastle Fans on the train to Norwood Junction last season. I had previously felt intimidated by them but they were good fun, chatting and joking about our respective teams. It's a shame because I still want them to go down because of the despicable Steve Judas Bruce.

Got attacked by Charlton fans and Birmingham fans. Charlton are the worst I've seen. The Charlton fans came off worse than me so ha, ha. To counter that, I ran away from the Zulus so there you go. No pojnt being a hero.
Best fans I've come across are Liverpool, who I've always found to be friendly with us. Take as you find, I say.

At least the Man United fans only have a few stops before they’re home
