Does anyone agree with me I think with the players we have got we would suit these formations with attacking full backs getting forward and helping wingers get crosses into the box for Benteke/Mateta? 5-1-3-1 Cahill-------Tomkins-------Dann Kouyate Townsend--------Eze--------Zaha Benteke 5-2-2-1 Cahill------Tomkins------Dann Kouyate---Riedewald Eze------------------------Zaha Benteke

Not for me. The outside centre backs have to be quick enough to get over and cover the space the wingbacks leave when they go forward.

Not good enough. I’d drop to a 4231 with Eze playing in behind Mateta and Ayew or Townsend on the right.

Where I think there is something to be said for a three centre back system, is that it allows us to get Zaha and Eze in what I think is their best positions. I would differ slightly to the OP in describing it as a 3-4-3: VG CB CB CB Clyne CM CM Mitchell Zaha Eze You can pick any two of our central midfielders to sit in. I quite like Mccarthy, but he'll probably be gone next year. Mateta might be the right man to play CF, but I think the jury has yet to see enough evidence on that. The issue is the three centre backs. Ours are too slow. Some teams play a back three with two centre backs and a defensive minded full back, so add a pit of mobility. At Chelsea they used Azpilicueta alongside Luiz and Cahill when winning the league. Arsenal used Tierney on the left of a three at time this year. Kyle Walker has played in a three for England. We could get away with maybe Ward, Cahill and Koyate, but the latter would have to play on his weaker side, and we'd have no cover at all really. Dann couldn't do it at all. Tomkins is never fit. Plus you'd want to have the summer to work on such a big shift in shape and tactics. Edited by TheBigToePunt (01 Mar 2021 10.23am)

If we ever get to see Ferguson, he may be just the man for a back 3 system next season.

According to a piece written by a WBA fan for five year plan, Ferguson is OK on the ball, but is basically a versatile, committed defenders defender. I'm not sure that Roy has every used a back 3/5 system though. The last Palace manager to give that a go was De Boer!
