I can't make up my mind if I'm excited by the signing of JP "Mateta" or not, a quick You Tube search of his "show real" - seems to show more misses than goals;

[Link]

I can't help thinking he just looks like a younger version of Tekkers and we have enough strikers capable of missing opportunities.

I hope I'm wrong and that JP turns out to be a really shrewd move and he delivers what we really need in a potent goal scorer.

Beyond that we now have 5 strikers on the books for one position in the way Roy lines up so; JP, Tekkers, Bats, Ayew and "sicknote" Wickham.

That means at least 3 will be on the bench, not in the squad - you can obviously discount Wickham from that equation.

What this means for Bats I have no idea.

We've got more strikers than Arthur Scargill..!!

My other concern is that we desperately need youthful and mobile central midfielders - if nothing else to release/make/get the most of Eze.

I do have to wonder if whatever money we have would have been better spent/invested on a youthful/mobile CDM, especially given our current league position of relative safety and this being the January transfer window.

I'm sure there are reasons for it in that JP is one we have been following for a while and now is the right time and we could sign him on a deal that suited our finances.

I just hope that also in this window we will at least sign one youthful and mobile CDM to help with our aging options in this area and open up the opportunities to getting the most our of Eze/Zaha etc..

Meantime with the 5 into 1 equation in terms of strikers I'm assuming that at least 2 are on there way and won't be seeing much of the first team squad for the remainder of the season.

Meantime it's really positive to see us doing some business and hopefully having identified a striker that can develop into a proven goal scorer - which is something we have been desperately lacking.

Just hope he can defend - coz that will be a pre requisite for Roy..!!

Well if he is a younger version of Tekkers and can replicate what Tekkers did at Villa then I for one will be happy!!

Good post by the way.

Yep, you're quite right. I'm happy to give this fella a chance and see what he's got...but if Belgium's #2 and #3 striker can't get a sniff, I don't see why this guy would be able to.

Good idea to get someone now who can hopefully be ready to fire next season..

Give the kid a few months to learn and acclimatise while we have the other strikers aswell

Then in summer Bat’s is gone and I’d be very surprised if Wickham is still here

A bonus if the kid bangs some goals in this season.

That’s probably about right

It simply has not worked out for Bats this time round and perhaps his loan signing will be cancelled.
Not entirely his fault.Quality striker for his International side who play to his strengths rather than to Roy's reliance on a defensive strategy that has badly affected the confidence of Benteke and Sorloth in this outdated regime.
Should BFS come calling for Benteke and we foolishly let him go,just watch him start scoring for fun again in a positive environment motivated by the Fat One.

You are joking of course.

A younger version of Benteke was one of the best strikers in the league.

At 23 he’s one to develop. We need to plan for the future. The most important bit of business we can do now is to get Jairo to extend his contract.

A new manager coming in in the summer may well have a different plan for the players we have at the club, but with a core of Eze, JP, TM, and Jairo, that is several positions in the team locked down for years to come.

I don't think he's joking at all.

I also have no doubt that in a big Sam team that actually plays to his strengths, CB would score a hatful.

Bentenke and Wickham out of contract in the summer and Batman's loan will come to an end (if not cancelled before then). Getting him now means the club can see if he works out and if not they might renew Big Ben's contract (they might anyway).

Very few strikers score even double figures in the PL each season, especially outside of the so-called big six clubs. Therefore, as much as goals it will be what else he brings to the team that we need to judge him on. For us he will need to be able to retain the ball, win direct balls in the air and bring others into play. I think that's why on reflection Batshuayi just doesn't fit in as he is just a good 6-yard poacher and we need more than that. It is also why I think Bentenke should be given more credit for his recent displays.

Ultimately though, if we are to push on we do need a regular goal scorer. You only have to look at what Leicester, Southampton and even West Ham (with Antonio) have achieved by having someone who regularly chips in with goals.
