Bexley Eagle yesterday posted that the way things are going, it's hard not to see another scoreless defeat (v West Brom). Can anyone put their finger on why things were going so differently just a couple of months ago. I think it was Dann who was saying then how nice it was to be looking up the table rather than down. I think even the dreaded word Europe appeared in one post. What has gone wrong? Or is it the case that nothing has changed and that were we just living in a fool's paradise and just getting lucky at that time?

Roy will always play the same way, zzzzzz, it’s just every now and then we come up against a team that’s not too great at the back and/or they just like to throw men forward, and even we can get forward and score ala Man UTD, Fulham and Leeds this season.

You would like to think it is more complicated than that but it probably isn’t.

we recently gave Leeds a tonking.

Last two games very frustrating, we go from sublime to ridiculous

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

We only scored 1 of the 4 goals from 'Open play' and that was at the end when Leeds had realised the game was lost.
We scored a goal from a corner, a free kick and an OG from Helder Costa.

Apropos the last couple of games, a combination of not taking chances and conceding some poor goals was our downfall.

It was clear we'd watched Leicester v Leeds and taken notes. Yes, Leeds were possibly unlucky with the offside decision, but we could have scored more than we did in the end, with 6 shots on target to Leeds' 3. Unless they change their approach when they play counter-attacking teams then they are going to struggle in these matches.

To be honest, heading into the WBA game, I think it could be as simple as replacing Dann with Tomkins (if he's fit), Kouyate if he's not, and bringing Zaha and Riedewald back in. We don't have a great deal of strength in depth, so the reality is when Zaha is out we are a much weaker team. In a year or two Eze might be our talisman, but he's still finding his feet at the moment (I do think he's made a strong start though).

Good points. I'll make my point again, again about set pieces. Eze took them against Leeds. We scored - it was literally unbelievable. Since then Townsend followed by PVA have destroyed every set piece we have had. How can any manager be so short sighted that he hasn't noticed? Our assistant and coaches, even ownership, so lacking that no one points this out?
When, at the end of the season, we are bottom of set piece goals will no analyst notice? This is actually a major failing and a disgrace. If I were that incompetent about a major part of my job, I would be fired. However, I would notice - a blind man would.

A sublime performance against a team that has just been promoted.

Had it not been for a very unfortunate off side decision and a bizarre own goal the game could have ended very differently. Leeds were open at the back because they had the courage to chase the game.

People moan about the level of criticism directed towards Roy but then go way over the top in exaggerating his successes.

Leeds are a team that we should fully expect to beat.

Every Palace supporter should be made to read IF before every game and particularly the line if you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposter the same.
We weren't as good as we thought we were after Leeds and we are not as bad as we think we are after Burnley and Newcastle. I expected we will finish somewhere between 10th-15th this season.
Could do with Zaha back though.

The point I was making in the OP was that there has been a change of momentum. As we approached the end of October we had beaten So'ton and Manchester U., we deserved a draw against Everton, yes we were dire against Chelsea, but we were good enough to have beaten Brighton, and we then beat Fulham. Since then, one win in four games, no goals in three of them.

Wilf, or the lack of Wilf, has obviously been a factor. But is it not also the case that we were trying to play more positively in the earlier games and that we've now just reverted to type?

I think that one needs to look at the stats for 2020 that were posted up on another thread. They are pretty damning: we are a poor side that will get the occasional good result to keep us clear of the drop. To get a win you have to earn it, not expect it.
I perceive a lack of fitness and motivation in this team, they seem rudderless and unsure about what it is they are trying to achieve other than Hodgson's limited plan A; predictable and over-reliant on one player. The performances for December should illustrate what needs to be done in January.
