With Zaha out it's hard to see anything but another poor effort this Friday against Newcastle.

After that we face WBA away, Spurs at home, Wet Spam away, Liverpool at home then Villa away.

Where do we get any points folks?

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

I am reminded of 'Snakes and Ladders' - we are about to arrive on the head of the snake.

Talking up the chances of a European place invariably results in a defeat. Zaha's absence accepted, when you look at the bench for the Burnley match, it's hard to believe anyone thought this was a game Palace could win. Why so negative and defensive at this stage of the season? After seven seasons in the Premiership, with the most expensive squad we've ever had, a top ten place should be regarded as a realistic ambition. To do this you have to try to win at places like Burnley.

Top 10 should be our ambition but look at the table and you will see currently we are above Man City and Arsenal and in honesty which of the teams above us would you expect us to overtake? It is not just about money but we are on a par with Burnley in terms of outlay over recent seasons and we have an ageing squad that still needs more youth.

We have much to look forward to with the likes of Eze, Riedewald and Mitchell starting to shine and other youngsters like Banks on the fringes, but realistically without significant investment or a huge amount of luck (or the teams in Europe collapsing with exhaustion!) we are unlikely to challenge the top 10 significantly. My personal hope is less about positions in the table but more about seeing a bit more entertainment on the pitch, of which there are signs of this happening.

I'm pretty sure that Burnley are about the only side who've spent less than us. Willo will tell us. I could be wrong. When I was watching them, I couldn't help but wonder where does Dyche find his journeyman clones? League One is my best guess.

May sound silly this early in the season but I am beginning to wonder where the further 27 points to stay up are going to come from.

We have been lucky in several wins but have been abysmal against Brighton, Chelsea, Wolves and now Burnley.

Many experts say we have a good squad of players but if so, they are not producing.

So, is it them or is it the manager's tactics?

The latter for me. He is incapable of either fielding the right team, inspiring them or employing the required tactics. His attitude is baffling and he doesn't seem much concerned when we play badly.

Heaven help us if Zaha is out through the virus (as now) injury or transferred in January. The statistics don't lie - we don't win many when he is absent.

I am pretty certain that any decent manager could bring out the best in the squad and compensate should we lose Zaha. I am beginning to think that, of those currently available, Eddie Howe could be that man.

Howe struggles to organise defences. Hodgson is safe for the season

In terms of 'Net Spend' for this season and the previous 4 seasons, the totals are almost identical, around £56 Mill.
