You only play 3 at the back if you have dynamic fullbacks capable of playing as wingbacks and they then become the most difficult roles on the pitch as they must play as both attacker and defender. PVA at his best maybe could play this role but we have no-one at right back at present who can.

Playing 3 at the back also requires your 3 to have a turn of speed which we lack from all ours who play there. So for numerous reasons we cannot IMO set up like that at the back.

The best we can hope for is that our full backs overlap our left and right side midfield a bit more and get some decent crosses in.

That's how I understand it too. Man City and England can do it due to Walker's electric pace.

In terms of "Shake it all about", Hodgson is "In/Out" depending on the result!

A win, like against Fulham, and he is "In" as far as supporters are concerned but after an abject performance and a less favourable result, like against Brighton, supporters want him "Out".

For avoidance of doubt I have not witnessed Hodgson gyrating his hips on the dance floor!

Mitchel is better then PVA in defending on that side but yes PVA is excellent in linking up the attack, Ferguson hopefully will sort the right side when available, but I really do worry about PVA getting back into position properly, it's going to be a nice problem for us though when all injured are back.

I think Ferguson can play left or right full back, hopefully he'll be competing with Wardy and Clyne on one wing, and PVA and Mitchell on the other. As for 3 at the back even if we had the players Roy wouldn't do it - bcos he's Roy. Venables always reckons the best type of defenders in a back three are players like Pearce or Jagielka (or Tompkins?) who can play both as full back and centre back, because back 3 defenders get pulled wide more. So Wardy, Kelly and maybe even our new midfielder Jairo would be beeter in there than say Scott Dann or Kouyate (who I prefer in defence to midfield). And Willo I don't see Roy 'gyrating' on the dance floor but I could see him doing the okey-cokey (or the conga) which is not quite the same thing.

My word, I now have this vision of Parish,Freedman, Hodgson,Lewington etc as part of a formation dancing team akin to that trained by Frank and Peggy Spencer from Penge.
