The new handball rule is ridiculous.

We just have to move on and hope over the course of the season we don't lose more points because of this

Because our football chiefs are so pc VAR has been totally wasted. It is now a pain in the neck that is killing the game. We have had one week up now this week down so overall it will wash its face through the season. But that wasn’t the aim. And it takes sooo long. Last week especially was crazy albeit in our favour.

Old Trafford was always renowned for bias decisions in their favour. Without the crowd it’s amazing how that’s changed. A full house there? That would never have happened without a nasty scene.

Problem is that writing a rule for every scenario is pretty much impossible.

The law is a blunt instrument as they say.

I think for the rest of the season we are going to see the rules implemented following the letter of the law, which is much fairer than allowing referees to interpret them.

I thought Roy summed it up really well. How on earth has this ridiculous new interpretation been allowed? I have not heard one word spoken in favour of it.

If I were a coach, I would be telling my players look for the oppositions arms in the penalty area and if no other advantage available, aim to hit an outstretched arm. There is a very good chance of a penalty.

Handball should only be given if an advantage has been sought through deliberate arm contact or if the contact was clearly avoidable. Lindelof last week and Joel this week were guilty of neither.

This really is diminishing the game and it takes sooooo long to reach these crazy decisions.

I have had enough, football was better before VAR and ridiculous rule changes. Not perfect and mistakes were made....but still better. I am wary of celebrating a Palace goal now in case VAR is going to rule it out. As for waiting several minutes for that to happen.....

Enough is enough.

Agree VAR has killed the game .I loved the celebrations in the ground and atmosphere when we scored but all an anti climax now when you have to wait to see if no VAR is given .I predict attendances will drop when crowds are eventually allowed back in,because of this and also fans will how found alternative ways of following there team.

The handball rules are just make it up as you go along, it seems. In the West Brom v Chelsea game, a Chelsea player clearly handballed in the box, before Abraham scored, but apparently it wasn't given as handball, because it wasn't immediately leading up to the goal, but 2 passes before. How does that work, if a defender handballs its given, but if the attacking side does, it isn't given. It was all seen by VAR clearly.
The game is being ruined by idiots, who make the laws and probably have never played the game.

Roy's views as given on MOTD reflect what most supporters feel. God forbid I actually agreed with the idiot Lineker the refs need to review in real time not super slow Mo.

Its a total shambles. I've stopped watching footie unless its Palace. Common sense, much like safe standing, have gone out the window. How do these idiots get in positions of power?

If they are showing these replays on the big screen in the stadium, then dishing out ridiculous penalty decisions there will be riots.

Imagine that happened in the 95th minute vs Brighton at the Holmesdale end. I would fear for the refs safety.

There is not one person in favour of the handball rule. VAR will also sadly continue unless fans make a stance.

A united fans protest across the country would be great - perhaps all fans don't turn up for the first 15 mins of a game. Someone needs to organise it though!

It seems to me the obvious solution is to raise the bar for awarding penalties. If they want to give a handball every time a player's "arm is away from their body" I think that's fine - if Ward's handball yesterday had occurred at midfield and they awarded a free kick for handball I'd think "fine, that's a handball." What makes it ridiculous is to award a penalty for it - it wasn't a goalscoring opportunity, it wasn't intentional, and in fact it looked the player who would have received the ball if it had gone through was offside...

Why not treat handballs that don't deny a goalscoring opportunity like an illegal back pass? Just award an indirect free kick.

Its not rocket science.
Award a penalty for deliberate handball.
A free kick plus booking elsewhere.

Therein lies the problem. Slo-mo always makes things look different to reality. At normal speed you get to see whether an arm movement is natural, e.g. if the purported offender is running then clearly his arms/hands WON'T be down at their side - no-one runs with their hands at their side and there are other examples. Unless the ref sees the purported offence in the wider context at proper speed, he can't make a proper judgment.

in my view, both Lindelof last week and Ward this week were wrongly penalized.

I wonder how the Europeans are interpreting this 'new' law.
