Don't know if their is a thread on this but Gareth Southgate and Chris Powell both came through our academy. I think either of them would do a good job for us. Powell lives locally, and I was impressed with the job he did for Charlton in difficult circumstances. Southgate was also pretty unfairly treated at Boro - sacked when they were 4th in the championship, which they haven't got near since. I'd be happy with Southgate as a future manager, I think his man management is excellent and he talks a lot of sense, maybe they could come as a pair after the Euros Edited by Vincehair (30 Mar 2020 10.03am)

Would be delighted if we could get him - but all theory for the next few year. I think he's improved a lot since his time at Borogh and he's really left no stone unturned in looking for marginal improvements with the England team. Every aspect of the England set up has been reviewed, he's pushed forward what an international manager should be doing. Some of the stuff he has done reminds me of Sir Clive Woodward's approach - watch building Jeruselm if you have some time on Netflix. The last 3 England Managers have a strong palace connection, as do the last 3 managers to get a British nation to the semi-finals of a major tournament.

Powell made a lot of signings at Charlton, including Nick Pope from non-league Bury Town and Dale Stephens from Oldham. Edited by Willo (30 Mar 2020 10.47am)

I certainly think Gareth Southgate would be an excellent manager for any club he chooses to go after his England tenure ends. He would be an absolute coup for Palace as he really is one of our own. He also has the gentlemanly characteristics of Roy Hodgson, which is also a plus. Both remind me of another gentleman of the old school I had the privilege of knowing, Sir (Hon) Magnus Magnusson. I've always had this strange feeling of deja vu every time I see either Southgate or Hodgson, didn't realise it was the Magnus Magnusson connection - wouldn't like to see the three of them in the same room together, my brain would go into melt down

I think, like Hodgson, Southgate wouldn't fill me with excitement.. but I would assume we would be a reliable mid table team, I think personally for me, I like mid table boredom but I want a manager with passion. Think about it like, big sam, we would be mid table, Southgate mid table, Hodgson mid table, pulls mid table - pulis and big sam would be the more fun manager to listen to, if that makes sense. However, Southgate would want the same project as England, at palace, or as much as he could handle and would we back that? Surely we would have to.

Southgate's hardly likely to want to quit England any time soon.
