This is a pretty good assessment of our current state. I can't see that there is a longterm vision for our football. Trying to get Roy to stay on for another year simply delays having to deal with a lack of direction. I don't think we're relegation fodder but will be soon if we don't have some sort of first team strategy.

Thanks FS. Don't disagree with that. We are heading for (or even in) the proverbial. Interesting that RH is currently second favourite to be the next prem manager to leave/lose his job.

Interesting article. I assume that Parish will have read it and it's a shame that he's unlikely to respond

Yeah, that article sums up where we are, and how we got here, perfectly. We're going to hell in a handcart and Parish is steering it.

Difficult to disagree with much in this article.
I think Parish understands the long term issues and a couple of years ago identified 2 courses of action,
1) the building of the new stand with increased capacity and revenues
2) Achievement of Category A status and the ability to attract a quality of young player to progress to the first team.
However, for whatever reason at the moment the club appears rudderless and to put it kindly are treading water - or are going backwards if one wants to be critical.
Inevitably this leads to speculation.
So far I’ve heard,
‘Hodgson is unhappy not getting more players in the transfer window’
‘The club identified players but Hodgson turned them down’
‘Hodgson does/ does not want to stay (take your pick)’
‘The owners agreed/disagreed with the budget for the window (again take your pick)’.
There is little communication from the club and Parish is as quiet as he has been during his whole tenure.
I’ve little doubt he is a fan and is seeking to act in the club’s best interests but it is difficult to see a way forward at present.

Good accurate assessment. We have run to a standstill due to deploying 'now' outdated workarounds, patches & fixes. You can only stick plasters on a gaping wound for so long ...

Something has to change, but what? It'll be Roy walking in the first instance whether we stay or or go down. We can't buy a win or a goal ... and with this bunch of players and Roy's exhausted system, I'm starting to think we could be the club that no one expected to go down ...

The piece nicely articulated how I feel. Parish is making it up as he goes along, no coherent plan apart from chancing that Roy’s effective but ultimately dull football keeps Palace in the Premier League.

If I was Hodgson , if we stay up then I would turn down the contract extension because how much confidence can you have in Parish’s promise of meaningful transfer funds ?

He could always ask for a contract extension until the end of the transfer deadline day so that he could walk away if our transfer business was up to recent standards

I agree with nearly all of that. very insightful for the most part.

Although I put more blame on the owners not backing our managers for the 'merry-go-round' of which they make reference.

All managers(bar Warnock) stretching back to Holloway have left under rumours of not being backed in the transfer window. Even with Pulis I thought there was this rumour flying about. Allardyce was backed in January to fix glaring holes in our squad, but was never promised the funds in the summer, DeBoer said that they didn't buy the players he wanted and we all know what is happening with Hodgson.

Couple that with the mismanagement of players contracts (i.e. Benteke) and the problems lay squarely at the owners feet. Whereas the American owners situation is not helping they cannot take all of this blame as this was happening long before they came onto the scene. They are fully justified in not wanting to fund this continuing mismanagement.

I've said it before, but SPs Fear of another administration has led to bad decisions (see Contract offers). He's been burnt when spending money, and each time it hampers him more. he's looking after pennies, instead of making Pounds.

Parish isn’t equipped to make football based decisions, plus he surrounds himself with acquiescent people (yes men). Eventually that’ll catch up with him.

There were attempts in January to buy from lower down the pyramid than we have been doing but they didn’t happen. If they don’t in the summer then we’re screwed. It’s as simple as that. I won’t even feel satisfied if we sign 3 very experienced top notch Prem players in their twilight years because it’s just delaying the inevitable, which is no doubt as part strategy of Parish’s while hoping a buyer comes in.

The article spells out we’re here by spending big and not much else and I’ve been saying for a long time that it’ll end in a bad way if we don’t implement any plans managed by football people with experience in these situations.

I agree; it's emperor's new clothes with Parish and a CEO who runs a business like that is inevitably destined to fail. The best managers employ the best people they can afford for their roles and take into account their contributions. Only those with oversized egos surround themselves with nodding dogs.
