This maybe covered in another thread (and if so, sorry Mods), but Tuesday night was another in a number of games this season where players - who can shoot/score from distance - have passed up the opportunity. We seem to have a mentality of needing o pass the ball into the net rather than occasionally taking a shot - even if it leads to a corner, it's a better result than running into a defender and them clearing the ball. Hopefully with Luka back (assuming he gets back in the team AND ups his performances) he might try a couple, but WTF won't McArthur or Kouyate have a pop? We seem to practice a lot before the game and then lose the will once in the heat of the action.

Man City have problems with it as well, in fact they only got over it against us because Pep was screaming to them to smash it long into the box!

shots from distance are speculative at best. Unless it really opens up for you and the keeper is vulnerable, you're better off trying to create an opportunity closer to goal. In recent years there haven't been many Palace players capable of finding the net from distance regularly. Ambrose, Punch. I wouldn't even class Townsend with them as he's far more inconsistent.

I don't know how to break this to you, but once the game starts there are 10 other players trying to stop that Seriously though, Townsend and Luka apart, we don't have any players renown for their shooting from distance. You look at Southampton the other night and Redmond has always had that in his locker and Armstrong too.

I used to shoot from distance in my younger days, wasnt very accurate( had a few wayward mishaps, she quite enjoyed it), as ive got older im happy for a 'tap-in'

To score, the ball obviously has to be aimed at the goal and go across the line. Any number of things could happen before that ... a deflection for an own goal/ corner or even a rebound for a second shot. If we don't have players up in the box trying to walk the ball in then surely we lose nothing by having a go? Undoubtedly, some shots will go in and it would always put pressure on the opposition's defence. Yes, I would love to see more shots from a distance.

There was a manager (can’t remember who) that fined any of his players who shot from outside the box - even if they scored!
Trivial fact - Palace used to win 5-1 at least once a season, maybe next season? |

Mark Warburton at QPR doesn't want his players shooting from 30 yards or more, the maximum he allows is around 22 yards.

The team have scored an open play goal from outside the area in only one league game since the beginning of calendar 2019. Zaha and Townsend v Cardiff Coutinho's available

I’ve been saying this for months, if you don’t shoot you won’t score and if you don’t score you won’t win any games . Southampton had a couple of cracks from outside the box, scored twice = 3 points, thanks very much !

I refer you to my post on Page 25 (8:22) of the post-Southampton game thread. Statistically we must be at the bottom of the ‘attempts’ league. We may not be blessed players who can bang them in like Andros’s ‘worldie’, but I bet they all try in training and, as mentioned in previous post, we pass up too many opportunities to have a pop, Saints proved the point last week.! “In football, everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team”.
