Question for referees out there. Benteke was given offside by Atkinson, but in his own half. He clearly indicated offside and then raised his arm as the kick was taken. However Benteke played the ball in his own half after coming back from an offside position in the Watford half. Shouldn't the free kick have been given from where Benteke was actually offside (in theWatford half), not from where he eventually played the ball (in the Palace half)?

I think the free kick was given for handball?

Apparently the rule changed before this season, so the free kick is now taken from where the player touches the ball. So whilst you can't be given offside if you are in your own half, the free kick can be taken from inside it.

I certainly remember from a few years back that you couldn't. Nor could you be offside from a free kick or a throw-in.

However, the rules may have well have changed since.

That is correct.

You definitely CAN be offside from a free kick! Imagine how the game would be if you couldn't be. You're right in that you cannot be offside from a throw in though.

According to the guy who I was sitting next to,they have changed the rule.If you were in an offside position in the opponents half and then come back into your own half the position where you touch the ball is the spot where the free kick is given.

I bow to your superior knowledge. Such was not the case back in the 60s and 70s, though. It must have gone the same way as the rule about passing back to the keeper and other anachronisms.

Can't be offside from a goal kick, corner kick or throw-in; but for sure can be offside from a free kick.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

You also can't be offside if you're wearing a red shirt and white shorts.
