Roger Hynd has passed away.

I remember him from our first Division 1 campaign. He was not a Palace great but he was hard and uncompromising and was an asset in our fight against relegation.

I remember he had a very distinctive, head jutting-run. I have a memory of him, at one promotion to the top division, being put on the tannoy to thank fans, but ask them to get off the pitch, in an incredibly strong Scottish accent. Does anyone else remember this? False memories "kick in" as we get older, I 'm afraid. I think he played in our first ever "top-flight" game versus Man Utd ( a 2-2 draw, I recall). He kept to a determined fitness & diet regime at a time when it wasn't common in players. His passing has brought back good memories of a determined player; I feel genuinely sad.

Here's Roger in our kit in 1969/70

There's also footage if you can get it of him & Gerry Queen in the MOTD studio after the Palace v Man Utd game in 1969 - which was their debut match. It's hilarious and sub-titles are needed!

He was Bill Shankly's nephew.

And here's Roger playing for Birmingham against us at Selhurst in March 1973. It was a goalless draw and didn't help us much as we tried to get out of the bottom two. Alan Whittle and Iain Phillip are our players.

Wasn't he the hard as nails bloke reputed to sleep on the floor as mattresses would make him too soft?

I thought it was Mel Blyth, not Roger Hynd, who scored our opener v Man U.

I think he addressed the fans over the tannoy when everyone charged on to the pitch after we escaped the drop in our first season in the top flight.

He was a fantastic personality - not unlike Delaney today.

I think he was the first of a load of Scottish players signed by Bert Head.

Very sad to hear the news.

Re Hynd & Blyth for the first goal v Man Utd.
If I recall correctly (!)they both went for the same ball and initially given to Hynd but later corrected to Mel Blyth. Depends which match report you read.
