The right to die, shouldn't be denied to people, capable of making that choice for themselves. You can refuse treatment, withhold treatment resulting in death, but you can't get a syringe of morphine or barbiturate to make it easy and painless. People should have the choice, and the only argument should be on how we safeguard against abuses. The argument of most of the 'care groups' are business related, as they tend to be linked to hospice charities and organisations, which have a vested interest in keeping people 'alive'. I don't believe that anyone who's watched someone die, slowly, inevitably and in pain, would say that person should not be able to make their own choice about how they die.

Hospitals allow people to die all the time. Often just going into an NHS hospital reduces your chances of survival considerably. The state of the health service is shocking and I acknowledge, before anyone comments, that they do save lives as well. Let's worry more about people who want to live rather than the headline grabbing stories of people who don't.They will get their wish soon enough.

Blame it on the litigationous society that we live in today. Back before the days of legal liability and hospice care, it was common practise for a GP to give his terminally ill patient 'a little extra to help with the pain'. It usually meant that they went peacefully in their sleep in the next 12 hours, and everyone thought that this was good medical care for a terminally ill patient. Nowadays, the aim seems to be to prolong life at any cost!

Whhilst the care my mother received from the Sue Ryder was fantastic and the efforts of the nurses was magnificent, I was shocked when a friend who worked for them in a senior level revealed just how poorly paid and overworke those staff are, and how much money the charity generates and pays high ranking staff such as directors.
